Artemi Panarin stands at a crossroads. The New York Rangers’ superstar forward enters the final year of his seven-year, $81.5 million contract with questions swirling about his future in Manhattan. What happens next could define both his legacy and the Rangers’ championship window.
Why Is Artemi Panarin’s Contract Situation So Critical for the Rangers?
The Rangers are heading into an important stretch when it comes to the future of Panarin, one of the most skilled and productive players in the league. Panarin, nicknamed “The Breadman,” is entering the final year of the massive seven-year deal he signed back in 2019.
With the end of that contract coming in the 2025-26 season, questions are starting to grow louder about what comes next. Panarin has been one of the most impactful free-agent signings in NHL history.
That’s not just fan opinion, it’s the belief of NHL insider Frank Seravalli, who recently shared his views on “B/R Open Ice” on July 22. According to Seravalli:
“Is Artemi Panarin one of the best free agent signings of all time? Like, if you look at his contract, if you look at his AAV, if you look at his production, and how he also lifted the New York Rangers from a team that was rebuilding to coming out of that, it fit their cap picture.”
Despite Panarin carrying a heavy $11.5 million cap hit, his production hasn’t dropped. He’s remained a consistent offensive force for the Rangers, helping keep them competitive in a tough Eastern Conference. Seravalli believes New York will do what it takes to keep Panarin beyond 2026, calling the partnership “a match made in heaven.”
“He was willing to go there, of course, and that seems to have been a match made in heaven. I’d have to think that there’s a way to work out a new deal for The Breadman,” Seravalli said.

What Are the Rangers’ Options Moving Forward?
There’s reason for optimism. With the NHL salary cap expected to rise over the next few seasons, the Rangers may have enough financial flexibility to offer Panarin a new contract without severely hurting their roster.
He’s currently eligible to sign an extension, and the team may follow a similar approach as they did with Igor Shesterkin last summer, locking him up before the season starts to avoid distractions. However, not everyone sees a clear path forward.
A recent July 17 piece from The Hockey News examined the Rangers’ options regarding Panarin, focusing on GM Chris Drury’s management style.
Drury has recently tried to move on from big-money deals that haven’t aged well, parting ways with veterans like Jacob Trouba, Barclay Goodrow, and possibly even Chris Kreider. While Panarin is still performing well, his age and expected salary demands could become sticking points in future negotiations.

If Panarin wants to remain one of the league’s highest-paid forwards, the Rangers may hesitate to offer a long-term, big-money extension.
The idea of a short-term deal or even a pay cut has been floated, but whether Panarin would accept that is unknown. If he declines to do so, it could open up a conversation about a possible trade, especially if the team wants to remain flexible with their cap.
For now, though, there’s no indication Panarin is on the trade block. Insider Arthur Staple recently emphasized that Panarin is considered “untouchable” on the current roster. Still, with his contract winding down, the 2025-26 season could feel like a make-or-break year, not just for Panarin’s time in New York, but for the team’s long-term plans.
The Rangers find themselves at a critical point. With a rising salary cap and a talented but aging core, balancing loyalty, performance, and cost will be the challenge. For Panarin, his future in blue may depend not just on how well he plays this year, but also on how willing both sides are to meet in the middle.
