When it comes to the 2025 NHL Draft, there was one clear favorite to bag the number one overall pick. And just like everyone expected, the New York Islanders drafted Matthew Schaefer. And his recent performances in the OHL have left no doubts.
Many have even expected him to win the Calder Trophy. But while he has been a standout player for the Erie Otters, many have questioned his physicality. And as one insider believes, it will be a winger from Montreal who has a better chance at winning the award.
NHL Insider Names Ivan Demidov Over Matthew Schaefer for Calder Trophy
In his two seasons with the Erie Otters, Schaefer was one of their best defensemen. He had a great two-way game and the ability to hit shots when needed. But his fitness has raised questions about his future exploits.
In the recent episode of “The Shaun Starr Show,” NHL insider and writer Marco D’Amico joined the host to discuss the likely candidates for next year’s Calder Trophy. Shaun Starr, a co-host, mentions that the Montreal Canadiens’ Lane Hutson won it the past season.
He asks if there’s any chance of Ivan Demidov winning the Rookie of the Year this time around. To this, D’Amico replies, “I don’t want to be perceived as showing bias here, but I definitely have him at the top of my list simply because of what we saw.”
He mentions, “And what we saw could be his potential utilization down the stretch. Seeing him start on the second line, I think, is understandable.” D’Amico mentions that Demidov will definitely benefit from playing at the top of the power play.
D’Amico Believes the Canadiens’ Playing Style Will Benefit Ivan Demidov More
He also mentions, “If he plays on that top power play wave, anybody who plays on that top power play wave benefits quite extensively from playing with Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson.” Not to mention, Schaefer is at his core a defenseman.
While both the Islanders and the Canadiens have been unable to make it past the playoffs in recent years, the Habs have a slight edge in offense. Suzuki (89), Caufield (70), and Hutson (66) all had 50+ point seasons, so Demidov will have an advantage.
D’Amico also mentions, “So I think that could be a big deal. So I think a guy like Ivan Demidov, especially if they play that diamond formation, I think he’s going to be able to pile in the points.” Not to mention, Demidov already experienced the NHL this season.

While he only played two games, he scored a goal and an assist, which will help him move forward. D’Amico ends the note with, “Because that’s exactly his bread and butter as he kind of figures out more of it,” referencing his playing style.
With less than two years of difference between Schaefer and Demidov, it will be fun to see which of the two rookies bags the Calder Trophy in the coming seasons.
