Darnell Nurse’s future with the Edmonton Oilers is increasingly uncertain after reports revealed the veteran blueliner has requested a trade. With Edmonton evaluating its options and teams around the NHL showing interest, discussions around a potential deal are beginning to intensify.
As potential destinations emerge, fresh insider reports have shed light on where the veteran defenseman may be willing to continue the next chapter of his career.
Elliotte Friedman Points to Eastern Conference Preference in Darnell Nurse Trade Search
Nurse has taken control of his future by formally requesting a trade from the Oilers, and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman believes the defenseman’s preferred destination may be becoming clearer.
Speaking on the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman explained that the process unfolded much differently than it did a year ago. He said, “This time, he was preemptive. He said, ‘I’m not even going to have to make you ask me because I’m going to tell you I’m asking for a trade.'”
The comment pointed out that Nurse approached management first rather than waiting for the organization to initiate another discussion about waiving his protection, as they reportedly did after their exit from the 2025 Stanley Cup Final.
Friedman also shed light on the type of destinations Nurse is targeting. While speculation has connected him to several teams, the insider indicated that the defenseman’s preferences lean heavily toward one part of the league.
“I think it’s mostly East. I don’t believe it’s Canada, but I think it’s mostly East,” Friedman said. He added that if there is a Western Conference exception, “I would think it would be LA simply because he knows the manager [Ken Holland] there.”
These remarks provide the strongest indication yet about Nurse’s preferred landing spot. Because he holds a full no-movement clause until July 1, 2027, Edmonton cannot move him without his approval. Nurse has reportedly submitted a list of three to five acceptable teams, allowing him to play a major role in determining the outcome.

Friedman also revealed that interest is expanding beyond the teams already on Nurse’s list. “Some teams who weren’t on the list started to get wind of it and began to ask, ‘Are we on the list? If not, could we get on it?'” he said.
The level of league-wide interest appears encouraging for Edmonton. Friedman stated, “I do think Edmonton’s going to be able to make a hockey deal here,” suggesting the Oilers may be able to acquire meaningful assets rather than simply moving the contract.

However, the financial component remains central to any negotiations. Friedman noted that several executives believe a trade becomes more realistic if Nurse’s cap hit is reduced through retention. He explained that teams have indicated “if it can come down to between 7 and 7 and a quarter, they think there’s room for this to happen.”
This combination of player control, growing market interest, and potential salary retention will likely determine how quickly the Oilers can complete one of the most significant trades of the offseason.
