The Minnesota Wild are facing one hurdle after another this offseason. While on one hand, their ongoing standstill regarding contract disputes with forward Marco Rossi isn’t showing any success, on the other hand, their star player Kirill Kaprizov is yet to re-sign.
While a few sources mentioned that Kaprizov is willing to re-sign, some have suggested that the left-winger is reluctant due to Minnesota’s weak playoff run. And while the general manager and president of hockey operations for the Minnesota Wild has reassured fans, one insider thinks that there might still be some minor inconveniences.
Insider Believes That the Path to Securing Kirill Kaprizov Might Be Tricky
Since the offseason started, GM Bill Guerin has been trying to re-sign Kaprizov, who is nearing the end of his five-year, $45 million deal. But according to rumors, Kaprizov is reluctant to extend his contract, and many were quick to blame the ongoing disputes with Rossi for this.
But GM Guerin was quick to dispel the rumors, as he mentioned, “The two are not connected. When we find a solution on one, we will do it.” However, insider Michael Russo has a completely different opinion. He believes that the Wild will have a hard time.
Michael Russo: Re Kirill Kaprizov extension: I think the Wild, financially they’re not far apart, I think though, there’s some stuff that…has been lost in translation this offseason; Guerin is waiting for him to get back to Minnesota – DFO Rundown (8/13)

On the latest episode of the “DFO Rundown,” as he joined hosts Frank Seravalli and Jason Gregor, Russo was ready with his take. When the Kaprizov situation was mentioned, he said, “I think the Wild, financially, they’re not far apart.”
“I think, though, that there’s some stuff that they feel has been lost in translation this offseason with him in Moscow, and I think that Bill Guerin is waiting for him to go back to Minnesota,” he continued.
Russo believes that Guerin would like to have a one-on-one with Kaprizov once he returns, and then they can discuss the implications of his new deal. He mentions that the Wild wouldn’t want any distractions going into the new season, and they will most likely get the situation sorted before October 7.
Gregor mentions, “And Kaprizov, he’s the face of that franchise in Minnesota. He’s one of the top five, I think, most dynamic players in the game. With an average of 1.21 points per game, Gregor isn’t far off in his take.”
Since joining the Wild in 2020, Kaprizov has been one of their most important players. He won the Calder Trophy in his rookie year and has since broken the Wild’s existing records for most goals (47) and most points (108) in the 2021-22 season.
Since then, it has been reported that he has been involved in 32.2% of the Wild’s goals despite having to miss multiple games due to injuries. With all this in mind, Gregor believes that this deal will be done even before the training camp.
