NHL Rumors: Insider Shares Insight Into Alex Tuch’s Contract Extension Talk

Sabres star Alex Tuch’s contract talks show a gap between his market value and the team’s offer, with trade speculation growing

The Buffalo Sabres’ season has been a roller coaster, marked by early struggles and renewed promise following four consecutive wins. They are now tied with Toronto in victories, hovering near the playoff bubble. While Buffalo has shown it can compete most nights, sustaining that level of play consistently has been a major challenge, leaving fans and management searching for answers.

Off the ice, the organization has faced its own turbulence. Injuries and a midseason front-office change have added uncertainty, and questions surrounding player contracts have taken on increased importance as the Sabres attempt to establish a clear direction.

Alex Tuch Contract Talks Reveal Gap Between Player Expectations and Sabres’ Offer

Alex Tuch has emerged as one of Buffalo’s most important players this season, anchoring the top six, contributing on special teams, and providing reliable two-way play. At 29, the Syracuse, New York, native has averaged more than 18 minutes per game, recording 11 goals and 18 assists in 32 games with a plus-minus rating of plus-3. His size, speed, and consistency have made him a trusted option in high-pressure situations, helping the Sabres remain competitive despite broader team struggles.

Contract discussions surrounding Tuch have been a focal point for the organization, and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman offered insight in his 32 Thoughts column. Friedman reported, “I’ve heard two stories: that the Sabres offered him in the vicinity of Thompson’s number ($7.14M AAV) and that they discussed concepts without making an official offer. Whatever the case, they were not anywhere near what Tuch considers his market value — around $10.5M.”

The comments illustrate a gap between what the organization appears willing to pay and the expectations of a player whose contributions have been central to Buffalo’s offense.

Tuch has also reflected on the Sabres’ recent struggles and the front-office shakeup, acknowledging that players share responsibility for the firing of former general manager Kevyn Adams.

“It’s always tough when you go through a change like that,” Tuch said. “I think it’s something that we don’t take lightly, that it’s on us. We’re a big reason why a man lost his job. We weren’t getting the results that were needed to happen, and we feel terrible about that. We need to be better in this locker room.”

Beyond contract negotiations, Tuch has also been the subject of trade speculation, with NHL insider Jeff Marek suggesting a potential blockbuster move to the Dallas Stars. Marek noted Tuch’s fit, saying, “That one would make a lot of sense, I think, for the Dallas Stars, and he would fit that team like a hand into a glove, specifically in the postseason.”

As the Sabres navigate on-ice inconsistency and off-ice transitions, Tuch’s contract remains one of the most significant storylines in Buffalo. With his current seven-year, $33.25 million deal set to expire at the end of the season and his performance remaining strong during a challenging stretch, the outcome of extension talks could significantly shape the team’s short-term competitiveness and long-term roster construction.
