‘Would Be Stupid To Turn a Blind Eye’ — Hurricanes Goalie Gets Brutally Honest on Mikko Rantanen Trade

The Carolina Hurricanes must rethink their offensive structure after Mikko Rantanen’s departure, a move that’s left the locker room concerned.

The Carolina Hurricanes are moving forward without one of their top forwards, and goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov isn’t downplaying the situation. In a recent interview, the 26-year-old netminder addressed Mikko Rantanen’s departure with rare bluntness.

After Mikko Rantanen’s Exit, Hurricanes Must Find Answers Fast

The Hurricanes sent Rantanen to the Dallas Stars ahead of the NHL trade deadline, and Carolina has felt the effects since.

“We lost Rantanen, Necas — it would be stupid to turn a blind eye to that, because they are key players, leaders of the team,” Kochetkov said. No sugarcoating. No PR spin. Just raw honesty about a player whose presence shaped the Hurricanes’ offense.

Rantanen had become a go-to option in tight games. Whether it was setting the tempo or finishing off plays, he made his impact known.

His ability to control possession and stretch defenses made him a key figure in Carolina’s lineup. Losing someone like that isn’t something you quietly adjust to.

Kochetkov knows that. He’s seen the effect of Rantanen’s play night in and night out. The Russian goalie, who’s quickly emerged as a fan favorite with his energy and flair in the crease, isn’t pretending it won’t matter.

“Even though Rantanen did not become a leader for us, you saw what he did in Dallas. You could say he led the team to the second round when he beat Colorado in Game 7,” he said.

Rantanen, a former first-rounder, brought more than stats. He offered stability and a sense of reliability on the top lines. He also thrived in high-stakes situations, something the Hurricanes relied on in their recent playoff runs.

“He was a high-level player. You see how he acts, how he sees the game. Even in the training process, there was something to learn from him,” Kochetkov added. “He is a great professional, he has been playing in the league for a long time. There were many interesting things that he did – his routine. Overall, I can only speak positively about him.”

Behind the scenes, there’s talk that a mix of contract disagreements and a shifting long-term vision contributed to his exit. Whatever the cause, the Hurricanes now face the reality of filling a serious gap up front.

Coaches are reportedly juggling line combinations and reevaluating offensive schemes. The emphasis now shifts to player development and finding chemistry with new faces. There’s no one-for-one replacement lined up. It’ll take a group effort.

Difficulty of Replacing a Star Player

Kochetkov, meanwhile, understands the pressure is about to ramp up. Without a player like Rantanen helping drive offense, every defensive breakdown becomes a bigger deal. Every save becomes more meaningful. But he’s not backing away from that.

Rantanen’s time in Carolina wasn’t long, but it left a mark. Nearly a point per game over two seasons. Steady performances. Strong locker-room presence. His chemistry with the core group made the Hurricanes more dangerous on any given night.

Now that that chapter is closed, the team shifts into problem-solving mode. Younger players will be asked to take on more responsibility, and free-agent additions may get a shot at elevated roles.

What’s clear is that Carolina isn’t hiding from the loss. And if their goalie’s mindset is any indication, they’re preparing to confront the challenge head-on.
