Hall of Famer Proposes Middle Ground In Connor McDavid’s Oilers Negotiations

Connor McDavid’s next move has fans and analysts on edge as the new NHL season draws near. The superstar center hasn’t signed an extension just yet, leaving plenty of room for speculation.

While the situation is drawing headlines, few details are clear, and the Oilers appear content to let McDavid set the pace.

Will Connor McDavid Stay in Edmonton?

McDavid is clearly taking his time with a plan in mind. Former NHL star Chris Pronger recently weighed in on the situation, saying the center might opt for a short-term deal, likely two years, to keep his options open.

“He probably signs a two-year deal, my guess, to keep the window open a little bit. The cap’s going up, they can find a couple more free agents to play with him, and they give it another run,” Pronger said on 100% Hockey with Millard & Shannon.

The focus, insiders say, isn’t just about money. McDavid has spent over a decade in the league and has his sights set on winning a Stanley Cup. After back-to-back Finals losses, he wants to see if Edmonton can realistically contend before committing to a long-term deal.

Former teammate Luke Gazdic, who roomed with McDavid during his rookie season, added that the center is in no rush.

“He’s in a position of power. I just don’t think there’s any rush for him,” Gazdic said. “He wants to see what moves they can make. Then there’s the draft. He’s not gone until July 1. And even then, free agency doesn’t guarantee a move.”

The timing is complicated. Other stars like Jack Eichel and Artemi Panarin will be free agents next year, giving McDavid a chance to gauge the market.

Financially, the Oilers have room, but they must consider existing contracts for Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard. Rumors point to an average annual value around $17 million, though some insiders, including Elliotte Friedman, suggest McDavid could accept less to help the team maintain flexibility.

Pronger on McDavid’s Contract Strategy

Pronger notes the roster and season outlook will play a big role in McDavid’s decision. Injuries, aging players, and the need for youth make timing crucial.

A shorter deal gives McDavid a chance to see if the Oilers can compete while keeping leverage.

In many ways, his approach mirrors Sidney Crosby’s early career choices in Pittsburgh, where long-term money was less important than winning. With training camp underway, every roster move and trade rumor could influence McDavid’s next step.

Patience seems to be the guiding strategy for both him and the team. Whatever happens, Connor McDavid will continue to shape Edmonton’s future and remain the NHL’s focal point this season.
