Montreal Canadiens forward Juraj Slafkovsky is once again turning heads on the Olympic stage with Team Slovakia.
His strong play has helped lift Slovakia to the top of the Group B standings, continuing what has been an outstanding international run for the young star, while quietly carving out a place in Olympic history.
Slafkovsky Hits a Historic Mark
With his latest goal, Slafkovsky became just the fourth male player to score 10 Olympic goals in nine career Olympic games before turning 22, the first to do so since Bruce Mather of Team USA in 1948.
It’s a rare company, and it speaks to how consistently he has delivered on hockey’s biggest stages.
Slafkovsky first burst onto the Olympic scene at the 2022 Beijing Games, where he scored seven goals in seven contests and powered Slovakia to a stunning bronze medal finish. That performance alone put him on the global radar.
Now, four years later, he’s building on that legacy. In this tournament, Slafkovsky has recorded 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists), continuing to drive Slovakia’s offense.
Is Slovak Hockey Back?
Slovakia’s success in this tournament has raised eyebrows across the hockey world. NHL analyst Mark Lazerus recently posed the question: “Is Slovak hockey back? Or is this a fluke, a once-in-a-lifetime group of young stars?”
Few expected Slovakia to contend in this year’s tournament. With just seven NHL players on the roster, many predicted they would finish near the bottom of Group B. Instead, they’ve turned heads.
Slovakia opened with a convincing 4-1 win over Finland and followed it up with a 3-2 victory against Italy.
To officially secure the top spot in Group B and punch their ticket to the quarterfinals, Slovakia will need a result against Sweden on Saturday. And once again, Slafkovsky figures to be at the center of it all.
Beyond the goals and milestones, Slafkovsky has embraced the atmosphere of the Games. “It’s wonderful,” he said. “I had no idea this many fans would come. I’m just happy that they all came. They were cheering, and it’s nice to hear some cheers in the Slovak language.”
Slafkovsky’s rise has been meteoric. He was selected first overall in the 2022 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, becoming the highest-drafted Slovak player in league history.
Back in Montreal, he’s enjoying a strong season. Through 57 games, he has 21 goals and 24 assists. He has established himself as one of the most dangerous young forwards in the Eastern Conference.

Now, on Olympic ice, he’s proving that his breakout in Beijing wasn’t a one-time moment; it was the beginning.
