Former Senators Exec Warns Mitch Marner To Brace Himself for Toronto Return

Mitch Marner returns to Toronto on Jan. 23 with the Golden Knights. Analyst Pierre McGuire expects a hostile Maple Leafs crowd.

Toronto Maple Leafs fans may want to circle Jan. 23 on their calendars. That’s the day Mitch Marner, once a hometown favorite, returns to Scotiabank Arena for the first time in a Vegas Golden Knights jersey.

After nine years of being a key contributor for the Maple Leafs, Marner’s homecoming is already being discussed with anticipation, and a fair amount of tension. As NHL analyst Pierre McGuire pointed out in a recent interview, the reception is unlikely to be warm. Instead, fans should brace for a dramatic night filled with emotion, criticism, and perhaps some reflection on what went wrong in Toronto.

Mitch Marner’s Return to Toronto Could Mirror John Tavares’ Infamous New York Islander Reunion

With the NHL schedule release set for Wednesday, Marner’s Jan. 23 return to Toronto stands out as one of the early marquee matchups of the season. The longtime Maple Leaf, now with the Golden Knights, will face his former team and former fans under what many expect to be an extremely hostile atmosphere.

NHL analyst Pierre McGuire joined “Leafs Morning Take” with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill to discuss just how heated things might get. Comparing the situation to John Tavares’ return to Long Island, McGuire didn’t sugarcoat his expectations:

“It will be nasty,” he said. “It will be a lot like when Tavares went back to Long Island.”

Tavares, who also left his original team after years of loyalty, was met with loud boos, mocking signs, and an overall cold shoulder from Islanders fans. And as McGuire pointed out, Tavares is considered one of the genuinely good guys in the league, having left a strong legacy in New York.

“He did a lot of amazing things there for the New York Islanders for a long period of time, but it shows you how angry the fans were. You can understand, they felt jilted,” McGuire added.

“I think the same thing is going to happen when Mitchell comes back to Toronto. I don’t think there will be any warm fuzzy stuff going on.”

Marner’s departure, while not officially dramatic in public statements, was clouded by months of speculation. Fans questioned his commitment to the team, particularly during his final season. Despite leading the team in points across multiple years, Marner’s playoff performances were frequently criticized. Add in the narrative that he already had one foot out the door, and you get a recipe for resentment among Toronto’s passionate fan base.

While emotions run high off the ice, McGuire also took time to speak about what the 2025 schedule means from a management and coaching perspective. He emphasized that early wins in October matter just as much as those in the spring.

“Two points in October are the same as two points in March,” McGuire said. “The difference is that you want to get momentum early so that you can stabilize your program.”

In that light, Toronto’s relatively lighter October schedule becomes a valuable opportunity for Craig Berube in his second year as head coach. Known for his emphasis on physical play, Berube had decent buy-in from the roster during his first season. Now, with more time and influence over team decisions, he’ll be looking to set the tone early with a group more reflective of his coaching identity.

The early-season stretch provides the Leafs with an opportunity to build confidence, find their rhythm, and gain time to prepare for tougher stretches ahead, including emotionally charged matchups like the one against Vegas and Marner. A strong start could solidify player belief in Berube’s system, making it easier to implement his style for the season.
