The Florida Panthers are in a precarious position this season. Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov’s absences have impacted the franchise more severely than anticipated. Through eight games, Florida has dropped four consecutive contests.
Head coach Paul Maurice recognizes that while the season remains young, the Panthers must find solutions quickly. Amid speculation linking a three-time Stanley Cup champion to potential trade talks, Maurice recently offered effusive praise that fueled connection rumors.
What Did Panthers Head Coach Have To Say About This Pittsburgh Veteran?
The Panthers face mounting challenges. After opening with four straight victories, defensive vulnerabilities became apparent. Captain Barkov’s absence created a significant void at center. The situation worsened when Dmitry Kulikov was sidelined following an injury against Philadelphia on October 9.
Meanwhile, offensively, Tkachuk’s absence has limited Florida’s firepower. However, recent speculation has linked the franchise to an unexpected name. Pittsburgh icon and 3x Stanley Cup winner Evgeni Malkin.
While the veteran center has spent his almost two decade long career with the Penguins, reports suggest his role with the organization may be diminishing. Speculation has even indicated Malkin would waive his no-movement clause to facilitate a trade if the Penguins don’t perform well.
Maurice’s recent comments about Malkin intensified the rumor mill. “I spent a little bit of time with Evgeni Malkin in Russia in the year that it was off, and I was amazed at how hard he worked. Because he didn’t have to,” he said.
According to Maurice, Malkin has already compiled a Hall of Fame-worthy resume across two decades in Pittsburgh. The coach believes the Russian center has consistently performed at an elite level. “He was just better than everybody else in the league,” Maurice added.
The Panthers’ bench boss emphasized Malkin’s work ethic even during the time spent training in Russia. “He drove hard to be a great performer; he wanted to win, he wanted to score goals, he wanted to drive, and I think they have such a high expectation,” he explained.
Maurice highlighted Malkin’s contributions throughout Pittsburgh’s championship era. “You know, his historic team, like from ’09 straight through to their two Stanley Cups, was just an incredibly fantastic team in depth, with those two men driving it,” he continued.
The coach included Malkin’s longtime teammate, Sidney Crosby, in his praise, noting how the duo anchored Pittsburgh’s success. “They have a couple of years, and now I would imagine it’s just a tremendous amount of excitement,” Maurice said.
With Maurice expressing such admiration for the Penguins’ core and speculation mounting about Malkin’s future in Pittsburgh, trade discussions between the franchises wouldn’t be surprising if Florida’s struggles continue.
