What Did Evan Rodrigues Explain About the Impact of Matthew Tkachuk’s Injury on the Panthers?
With 45 points in 47 playoff games during the Panthers’ championship runs, Tkachuk has been a big reason behind their postseason dominance. But with him undergoing surgery earlier this summer, experts believe that he could end up missing up to four months of the 2025-26 season.
Tkachuk suffered a torn adductor muscle and sports hernia during the Four Nations Face-Off earlier this year, undergoing surgical repair in August. With their star forward sidelined, teammate Rodrigues explained what losing Tkachuk means for the Panthers in a recent interview with RG.
“Just getting off to a good start even without Chucky, everyone’s going to need to step up a little more,” Rodrigues told RG. “We’ve done a good job of that years prior. When guys go down, Barky, Reinhart, in the playoffs, guys have stepped up.”
While Rodrigues believes the Panthers have enough depth to manage without Tkachuk, he acknowledges the forward’s absence will be felt. “Not only the on-ice stuff, but also the locker room voice that he is,” Rodrigues said. “You can feel that a little in the room.”
Rodrigues continued, “We have guys that can step up, and that’s just like any other team. But that’s what we’re going to have to do.” But he also believes that, heading into the new season as the champions, the Panthers will have the biggest target on their backs.
“You have a target on your back; I feel like it’s the biggest challenge, and everyone wants to knock you down,” Rodrigues said. “The biggest thing is being able to handle that, being able to handle the ups and downs of another long season.”
He continued, “Guys have played a lot of games over the past two to three years, and this year is going to be more difficult with the Olympics coming into play.” According to Rodrigues, handling that stress along with the difficult points in the season will be their biggest struggle.
However, as the 32-year-old enters his third season with the Panthers, with back-to-back championship success, he also remains confident in their squad depth. He mentioned that getting a good start in the upcoming season will be another key to securing the three-peat.
