The Toronto Maple Leafs are exploring options to strengthen their blue line, and New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton is reportedly on their radar. But not everyone is on board with that idea.
Former Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill made his stance crystal clear: he’s not buying the prospect of Hamilton in a Leafs uniform.
Ex-Leafs Enforcer Jay Rosehill Trashes Dougie Hamilton Trade Rumors
Speaking on Leafs Morning Take with Nick Alberga, Rosehill dismissed the trade speculation outright.
“Great player, but not even remotely interested (in adding him to the Leafs fold),” he said.
“Why would you add a $9M defenseman after watching the playoffs the last 10 years? I don’t get it. You just lost Mitch Marner, so you’re going to replace him with another good D-Man?”
His concern is simple – that adding another high-priced defenseman doesn’t solve the team’s scoring problem.
“I do understand, I have seen it a few different times, and I like that Brad [Treliving] has got some cap space in his pocket and he’s being patient with what’s happening in the hopes of getting another top-six forward,” he continued.
“That’s what this team needs. You get a $9M D-Man and go into the playoffs tomorrow, how are they gonna score goals? That’s their problem in the playoffs.”
Leafs Linked to Hamilton Amid Ongoing Roster Questions
Reports suggest the Leafs are among a handful of teams who’ve contacted the Devils about Hamilton’s availability. An unnamed league executive noted Toronto is eyeing blueliners with offensive upside, a trend in their recent scouting.
Hamilton, 32, is under contract for three more years at a $9 million cap hit. While his full no-movement clause expired this summer, he still holds a modified no-trade clause, letting him block deals to 10 teams. That opens a window, but only a narrow one.
Then there’s the money. Toronto is already carrying Morgan Rielly’s $7.5 million cap hit. Making room for another big contract won’t be easy unless a player like Rielly is moved. But it’s also not that simple.
The Devils also have to think twice. Johnathan Kovacevic is sidelined after knee surgery, and Hamilton is now their only healthy veteran on the right side. Trading him might leave a big hole.
Teams like Dallas, Detroit, and Utah have also reportedly shown interest in Hamilton, but it’s Toronto that’s drawing the most attention. For the Leafs, it’s a tempting move, if they can afford it.
Some analysts, including Alberga, believe Hamilton fits what the Leafs need.
“Love a potential Dougie Hamilton fit in Toronto,” he wrote. “That said, it probably only makes sense if Rielly’s open to leaving.”

Others aren’t convinced. Rosehill, for one, thinks Toronto’s focus should be elsewhere. So far, no firm offer has surfaced. No price tag has been revealed.
What’s clear is that GM Brad Treliving has options and time. The question is whether Hamilton is really the answer, or just another big name with a big number attached.
