‘Bad Just Gets Worse’ — Ex-Leafs Enforcer Struggling to Wrap His Head Around Depth of Toronto’s Dysfunction

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ 2025-26 season was a prolonged nightmare that reached a fever pitch in April. Over the course of the month as the regular season approached its end, the Maple Leafs failed to win a single game. The very team that led the Atlantic Division scoreboard merely one year ago has been rendered unrecognizable.

So drastic has the Leafs’ turn of fate been, that a former player of the franchise is still struggling to come to terms with it.

Jay Rosehill Laments Toronto Maple Leafs’ Decline this Season

As of today, the Leafs are at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with 78 points. Even the Florida Panthers, who have had a broadly unsuccessful season and were nowhere close to channeling their Stanley Cup-winning form, fared much better with 84 points.

The NHL’s most expensive franchise ought to meet a better end. How things have turned out in Toronto has left Rosehill dumbfounded.

The former Leafs enforcer expressed his frustration about the Leafs’ rapidly worsening situation. Rosehill also stated that, after such a whirlwind season, it will be interesting to see how the management navigates the coming offseason.

“The bad just gets worse. It’s incredible how far this team has fallen in such a short time. So many problems, so many questions. This summer will be interesting if nothing else.”

The Leafs’ downfall cannot be traced to a single reason. To begin with, Toronto’s fate was drastically altered the moment Mitch Marner decided to bid farewell to the franchise. The Leafs failed to find an alternative for Marner on the ice or off it. Marner was a critical part of the roster that enabled Toronto to make consecutive playoffs.

Moreover, James Mirtle, Chris Johnston, and Jonas Siegel have noted Marner’s vibrant locker room presence in their recent contribution to The Athletic. ” In the beginning, it was weird for everyone without Marner, a do-it-all superstar whose chatty, enthusiastic dressing room presence had been a constant.”

Regardless of whether it was solely due to Marner’s absence, the team reportedly lacks camaraderie. When Auston Matthews crumbled after a knee-on-knee collision with Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas, none of Matthews’ teammates present on the ice at that moment came forward to their captain’s defense.

Sure, Max Domi fought Gudas on March 30 in a game against the Ducks, but the response was much too late.

Finally, the former GM of the Leafs, Brad Treliving, made callous moves at the trade deadline, essentially paving the way for his dismissal.

The Leafs are in a state of flux right now and are expected to be there till the quest for a new GM ends. The next General Manager of the franchise will have their hands full, with a discussion with Matthews and his future with the team being of primary importance.
