Penguins News and Rumors: PIT Trying To Avoid Down-To-The-Wire Situation With Evgeni Malkin

Penguins aim to avoid past Evgeni Malkin contract drama as star’s future remains uncertain despite strong season performance.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are enjoying a strong season, sitting second in the Metropolitan Division with a 34-18-16 record and eyeing a deep playoff run. Amid that success, attention has turned to one of the franchise’s biggest names, Evgeni Malkin, as questions about his future in Pittsburgh continue to grow.

Will the Penguins Lock In Evgeni Malkin Before Free Agency?

At 39, Malkin is playing in the final year of his four-year, $24.4 million contract. With no extension in place yet, speculation has started to build around whether this could be his last season with the Penguins or even in the NHL.

Still, the lack of progress on a new deal has kept the rumor mill active.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Penguins are trying to avoid a repeat of past contract drama. “Remember the last time this happened, where Evgeni Malkin was a free agent and it became, Malkin’s leaving, and the next day he re-signed. I think the Penguins are trying to avoid that scenario,” Friedman said.

His comments reference the chaotic summer of 2022, when negotiations between Malkin and the Penguins nearly broke down completely. At one point, it appeared he was headed to free agency, with reports suggesting he was leaving Pittsburgh. But just hours before the market opened, Malkin reversed course and signed his current deal.

Even at this stage of his career, Malkin is still producing, with 51 points in 48 games this season, proving he remains a key piece for the team.

His future is also closely linked to longtime teammate Sidney Crosby, who is signed through next season. Because of that, it’s unlikely the Penguins would offer Malkin a deal that goes beyond Crosby’s current contract.

For now, both sides appear content to revisit contract talks after the season. Malkin recently shared details of a conversation with GM Kyle Dubas.

“He asked if I wanted to play next year. I said yes. He said, “Don’t worry, we talk after the season.” I’m OK (with that). I feel great. I want to play next year, too. Maybe two years. Who knows? Again, it’s just business,” Malkin said.

It remains to be seen how things will unfold once the offseason arrives. But if an extension were to happen, it’ll likely happen well before free agency to avoid a repeat of the previous situation.

For now, the focus remains on the ice as the Penguins prepare to face the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, hoping to keep their momentum going into the playoffs.
