The Florida Panthers continue to battle mounting injury issues as the season unfolds. Key forward Matthew Tkachuk landed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery in August. Last month, Captain Aleksander Barkov suffered a torn ACL that will sideline him for months.
Despite the adversity, the Panthers won three straight games before suffering their first loss of the season Tuesday night to Philadelphia. As Florida adjusts to life without their core players, another significant blow has emerged with a key defenseman undergoing surgery.
When Will Dmitry Kulikov Return to the Panthers’ Lineup?
The Panthers’ offense continues to produce, but Tkachuk’s absence has clearly impacted Florida’s forward depth. Meanwhile, without Barkov anchoring the blue line, the franchise has struggled to maintain stability in its own zone.
The blue line suffered another significant blow when 35-year-old defenseman Dmitry Kulikov sustained a wrist injury during Florida’s game against Philadelphia on October 9. The injury occurred after an attempted check on Bobby Brink, forcing Kulikov to leave the ice clutching his arm midway through the contest
Medical evaluation revealed a labral tear requiring surgery. Head coach Paul Maurice provided an update on Wednesday. “Had surgery this morning to repair a labral tear,” he said. The recovery timeline is projected at five months, with Kulikov’s return expected in March 2026.
“Dmitry is like some of the other players that we have out of the lineup; he is unique in his role,” Maurice said. “Excellent penalty killer. Physical player in the five, six [spot on defense], but he can skate and close gaps. So, that’s the hole.”
Kulikov has been placed on injured reserve, with Uvis Balinskis slated to replace him in Florida’s next game against Detroit. Maurice expressed confidence in the veteran defenseman. “Uvis played, I believe, 74 games for us last year (76), so we’ll put in a veteran player who’s played here.”
“So again, it’s the same concept. You don’t replace these guys that you have out of the lineup. The weight doesn’t get heavier,” Maurice explained. “You just have fewer guys to lift. So, everybody shares it.” Maurice emphasized his faith in Balinskis’ capabilities.
“We have full expectation of Uvis playing the game that he’s capable of playing. He doesn’t get any room, not to. But that’s a positive for us. We think we’re putting a guy in who’s very capable,” he said Wednesday.
Notably, Kulikov hasn’t been placed on long-term injured reserve despite the lengthy absence. Under current CBA rules, players on LTIR cannot return during the same season, which would disqualify Kulikov from playoff eligibility.
The Panthers have taken the same approach with Barkov, who remains on the standard IR despite a recovery timeline of seven to nine months. With multiple key players sidelined, Florida faces crucial lineup decisions as it pursues a third consecutive Stanley Cup.
