‘You’re A Pushover’ — Red Wings’ 4-Time Stanley Cup Champ Goes on Unfiltered Rant Against Detroit’s Roster

Darren McCarty calls the Detroit Red Wings a pushover in an unfiltered rant as seven late losses threaten their playoff hopes.

The Detroit Red Wings are close to the playoffs, but several teams are competing with them as the regular season reaches its boiling point. With playoff hopes hanging by a thread, a series of costly late-game collapses has turned what should be a postseason push into a frantic scramble for survival.

As the roster struggles to find its identity under immense pressure, the lack of urgency on the ice is starting to pinch those who established the franchise’s gold standard. Now, one of the most legendary enforcers from Detroit’s championship era is breaking his silence, delivering a blistering critique of a team he believes has lost its way.

Why Darren McCarty Is Blasting the Red Wings’ Roster Amid Their Playoff Push

Darren McCarty, a four-time Stanley Cup champion with Detroit, openly questioned the team’s mindset after a tough stretch since late January. Before their 4-3 shootout defeat to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, McCarty shifted focus away from tactics and instead criticized the group’s effort and urgency during his appearance on the Woodward Sports Network podcast.

“It’s the effort,” McCarty said while evaluating the team’s play. “At this part of the season, you can’t be motivated to play a 60-minute game? What are you doing?”

His frustration centered on how Detroit has handled its recent games. The same pattern was evident on Tuesday, when they nearly had the game under control before allowing a late equalizer.

Detroit had built a lead through contributions from Dylan Larkin and Justin Faulk, but could not close it out. John Gibson made 32 saves, yet defensive breakdowns in key moments proved costly once again. The loss extended a poor stretch, with the team dropping seven of its last nine games and slipping further behind in the standings.

McCarty’s critique went deeper as he questioned the group’s identity, saying, “When push comes to shove, you’re a pushover. My biggest thing is like, you know, the Detroit Red Wings are now the team that you want to play because, you know, what are you scared of?”

Inside the locker room, Larkin also acknowledged the weight of recent losses. “I hope that’s not the one, and I hope the Minnesota one is not the one that’s the final nail in the coffin,” he said. “That’s a letdown, in tough fashion again.”

Detroit’s position remains fragile, sitting just outside the playoff picture with limited games left. The team trails key rivals in both points and tiebreakers, which adds pressure to every remaining matchup. Upcoming games against the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning will likely define their season.

While Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond have led the offense, defensive lapses and inconsistent special teams continue to limit progress. Injuries have also impacted depth, forcing lineup adjustments late in the schedule.

McCarty also pointed to the expectations tied to the franchise’s history. “You gotta hate losing more than you like winning,” he said, stressing a mindset he believes is missing. He admitted he does not have all the answers, but his message remained direct: “Something needs to change.”

With the season nearing its end, Detroit appears to face a clear challenge. Results need to improve quickly, or the gap between promise and execution may lead to another missed opportunity.
