Insider Urges Stars To Pursue Major Trades Following Tyler Seguin Injury
Seguin has been a crucial piece of Dallas’s forward depth despite no longer being a first-line player. The longtime Stars center carries a $9.85 million cap hit through 2026-27 on his eight-year, $78.8 million contract.
However, his absence creates both roster and cap space that the Stars could exploit. NHL analyst Nick Alberga recently addressed Dallas’s situation following Seguin’s injury. He suggested Dallas should pursue two significant additions to bolster their Stanley Cup chances.
“Dallas should trade for both Nazem Kadri and Rasmus Andersson. Time to go all in. That team’s ready to win,” Alberga stated emphatically. The analyst believes the Stars possess the assets and cap flexibility to make blockbuster moves rather than simply replacing Seguin internally.
The proposal would see Dallas acquire two Calgary Flames veterans in separate deals. Kadri carries a seven-year, $49 million contract signed in 2022, with a $7 million cap hit through the 2028-29 season.
Andersson holds a $4.55 million cap hit through 2025-26 before becoming an unrestricted free agent. The combined $76.3 million in salary commitments represents a massive investment.
Kadri would address the center depth issue created by Seguin’s injury. The 35-year-old veteran brings championship experience after winning the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2022. His physical edge and two-way ability would fit seamlessly into Dallas’s system.
The Flames forward has recorded 22 points through 28 games this season despite Calgary’s struggles. Meanwhile, Andersson would bolster Dallas’s defensive corps.
The Swedish defenseman brings legitimate top-pairing ability and offensive production from the blue line. His two-way game and leadership would provide another veteran presence on the back end. Andersson won Calgary’s team MVP award last season.
However, executing both trades presents significant challenges. Dallas would need to clear substantial cap space to accommodate both salaries. The Stars would also need to assemble competitive trade packages for each player, likely including premium draft picks and prospects.
Calgary has shown reluctance to trade with other Western Conference contenders. The Flames want to maximize returns while ensuring they’re not helping division rivals. Dallas would need to overwhelm Calgary with offers to get both deals done.
