Dallas Stars’ $96M Forward Mikko Rantanen Facing Hefty $99,000 Fine Over Tricky Off-Ice Situation

Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen is facing a hefty fine in his native Finland. Find out why.

The acquisition of forward Mikko Rantanen by the Dallas Stars and his subsequent eight-year contract extension were hailed as one of the signature moves by general manager Jim Nill.

Rantanen made an immediate impact with the Stars, delivering a standout Game 7 performance in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to help eliminate his former Colorado Avalanche teammates. He also helped Dallas advance to its third straight Western Conference Final.

However, Rantanen is facing a complicated off-ice situation in his native Finland and may be required to pay a substantial fine.

Mikko Rantanen Facing Six-Figure Fine for Missing Finnish Military Service

According to Finnish outlet Helsingin Sanomat, Rantanen was supposed to arrive in Finland for mandatory military service in April 2024, when he was still with the Avalanche. He reportedly submitted an official request to change his starting date and arrival time.

Translated to English from Finnish, the summons states:

“Rantanen has not sufficiently carefully familiarized himself with the order to commence service given to him, as a result of which he has unlawfully failed to report to his place of service.”

Every Finnish male over the age of 18 is required to serve in the military.

Rantanen is also expected to represent Finland in the Winter Olympics, scheduled for February.

Rantanen was drafted 10th overall by Colorado in 2015 and quickly established himself as one of the NHL’s most talented young players. He helped the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 2022, their first since 2001, recording five goals and 20 assists during that postseason.

In January, Colorado stunned fans by trading Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes. After reportedly refusing to commit to Carolina long-term, he was dealt again, this time to the Stars, who saw the perfect opportunity to acquire the talented forward.

“The chance to acquire and extend one of the best forwards in the NHL is an opportunity that we couldn’t pass up,” Nill said shortly after Rantanen’s contract was signed. “He demonstrates exceptional skill and vision on the ice and his size, consistency and versatility make him one of the most complete players in the League. Mikko’s experience in the postseason is an invaluable asset to our team as we work toward the goal of winning a Stanley Cup. We are thrilled that Mikko wants to wear Victory Green and make Dallas his new home for the foreseeable future.”

Rantanen’s new contract, which carries a $12 million cap hit, begins this fall.
