Conversations are swirling on who will replace Brad Treliving as Toronto Maple Leafs general manager after the team announced his termination on Monday.
Treliving took over from Kyle Dubas following the 2023 season, but after several disappointing years, the Leafs are turning the page once again. With the 2025-26 campaign all but over for Toronto, the franchise is already on the hunt for its next general manager.
Unfortunately, one of its top candidates is staying put in Dallas.
Potential Maple Leafs GM Candidate Shuts Down Rumors
As Toronto continues to look for answers, a possible suitor for the general manager position has already shut down any discussion of him filling the spot.
Jim Nill of the Dallas Stars has proven to be one of the league’s elite general managers over the past decade. Joining in 2013, Nill was the driving force on several acquisitions that made the Stars Stanley Cup contenders over the last few years.
On Tuesday, it was announced that the 67-year-old would remain with the club, halting any rumors of a move to Toronto.
Stars GM Jim Nill said on the Ticket that his extension was worked out a few weeks ago, and with all the rumors and speculation, he and the team really wanted to announce it now to save them and others from all the phone calls.
Wants the focus squarely on the team.

Stars beat writer Sam Nestler reports that the deal has been done, and the confirmation was issued to prevent other teams from inquiring about his services.
“Stars GM Jim Nill said on the Ticket that his extension was worked out a few weeks ago, and with all the rumors and speculation, he and the team really wanted to announce it now to save them and others from all the phone calls,” Nestler said. “Wants the focus squarely on the team.”
The Leafs and Stars are trending in opposite directions, and with Dallas on the verge of another potentially deep playoff run, Nill has no interest in exploring other opportunities.
Jim Nill’s Accolades Over 13 Years With the Dallas Stars
Dallas boasts a 549-346-125 record across the 13 seasons Nill has been at the helm. Additionally, the club has appeared in nine postseasons and reached the Stanley Cup final once (2020).
Stars owner Tom Gagliardi sang Nill’s praises, expressing his gratitude for the brilliant hockey mind returning to Dallas.
“Jim has established himself as one of the most respected general managers in the NHL,” Gaglardi said. “Through his roster management and talent evaluation, he has positioned our franchise to be amongst the best teams in our League in both the present and future. I’m thrilled that he will continue to guide the Stars.”
As a testament to his exquisite roster management, Nill was behind bringing in core pieces like Mikko Rantanen, Miro Heiskanen, Jake Oettinger, Jason Robertson, Tyler Seguin, Wyatt Johnston, and many more. Whether it’s his unique ability to evaluate trade assets or his uncanny talent radar in the draft, Dallas’s success stems from the top.
The recently announced extension keeps Nill in Dallas for two more seasons.
