Connor McDavid Highlights Gap in Quality Between Oilers and Tampa Bay Lightning After 5-2 Loss

McDavid admits Oilers were outclassed by Lightning as loss highlights gap in structure and raises concerns despite standings.

The Edmonton Oilers are searching for consistency at a crucial point in the season, and their latest setback didn’t help.

Edmonton dropped its second straight game with a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, a result that left plenty to think about, especially for captain Connor McDavid.

Connor McDavid Admits the Edmonton Oilers Were Outclassed by the Lightning

McDavid gave Edmonton an early boost, scoring with just 22 seconds left in the opening period to make it 1-0. But that momentum didn’t last long.

Tampa Bay took over in the second period, with Anthony Cirelli tying the game on a rebound before Jake Guentzel struck on the power play. Nikita Kucherov then added a short-handed goal to push the lead to 3-1.

Edmonton tried to respond in the third, getting a bounce their way on a goal from Joshua Samanski. But the Lightning quickly shut the door. Kucherov and Cirelli each scored again to seal the 5-2 win.

After the game, McDavid didn’t hold back when assessing Tampa Bay’s performance.

“Very good… they’re extremely well coached, extremely well organized. They’re very, very rehearsed in everything that they do. It’s very impressive… and when you do break them down, they’ve got a heck of a goalie to backstop them,” McDavid said.

When asked how a team reaches that level of structure, McDavid pointed to the difference in execution. “Yeah, well that’s a coaching question… Obviously we’ve been playing together a long time and we feel like we’re somewhat rehearsed and organized, but not to their level,” he said.

A Reality Check for the Edmonton Oilers

Even with the back-to-back losses, the Edmonton Oilers remain second in the Pacific Division at 34-28-9 with 77 points, but it’s starting to raise some bigger concerns.

If you stack that up against the Eastern Conference, it wouldn’t look nearly as impressive and might not even be enough to make the playoffs. McDavid also hinted at that, acknowledging the division hasn’t been as competitive as others around the league.

“Yeah, obviously we’re fortunate to play in this division… It’s a bit of a pillow fight right now, but yeah, thankful obviously to not have lost any ground. That being said, we’ve got to find a way to win some games here on the road…We’ve got to make some ground too, so that’s a good challenge ahead,” McDavid said.
