‘I Don’t Think That Was Productive’ – Connor McDavid’s Comments on Oilers HC Fail to Impress Edmonton Legend

Edmonton legend Craig MacTavish says Connor McDavid's coaching comments were not productive and could make teammates nervous.

Connor McDavid’s comments about “coaching” aren’t fading anytime soon. Even though he clarified that he wasn’t taking a shot at his head coach, Kris Knoblauch, the conversation continues to gain traction.

Why Former Edmonton Oilers Forward Craig MacTavish Called Out Connor McDavid

Following a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, McDavid openly praised Jon Cooper, who recently coached him during Team Canada’s 2026 Olympic silver medal run, while seemingly sidestepping questions about Edmonton’s own preparation.

“They’ve got a great system… they’re perfectly coached,” McDavid said. When asked what it would take for Edmonton to reach that level, he added, “That’s a coaching question. You can ask Knoblauch that.”

Those remarks quickly went viral, with many interpreting them as a subtle jab at his own coach while praising another.

After a brief practice on Monday, which McDavid left early for what he described as “maintenance” (hips and groin), he addressed the media to clear things up. “We’re not taking shots… I understand how people could look at it that way, but it’s not what I was intending to do at all,” McDavid said.

He also admitted he was surprised by how quickly his comments were seen as criticism of his coach.

Still, former Oilers forward Craig MacTavish wasn’t convinced the situation was handled well. “I don’t think that was probably productive,” MacTavish said. “He was pretty profusely complimentary of the coaching staff in Tampa…. It’s hard to compare anybody to Jon Cooper. He’s the preeminent coach in the game right now.”

MacTavish suggested McDavid’s frustration may be growing, which can unintentionally create pressure on teammates, especially those fighting to hold onto roster spots. “Because you don’t wanna let a guy like that down. Sometimes guys that are trying to hang onto an NHL job can get nervous in those situations. Sometimes that’s not always productive,” he added.

In his view, even well-intentioned comments can have ripple effects, particularly when they come from a leader like McDavid.

For his part, Knoblauch didn’t appear bothered by the situation. Instead, he took a broader approach when addressing the media. “When things are going well, there’s very little criticism,” he said. “When you’re losing, everyone has to look in the mirror.”

While the conversation off the ice continues, the Oilers understand that the only way to quiet the noise is through their play.

For now, they’ll look to put the distractions behind them and turn their full attention to getting back on track as they prepare to take on the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday.
