‘There Is Your Conn Smythe Trophy Winner’ — Mitch Marner’s Record-Setting Feat Makes NHL World Take Notice

Talk about a statement performance. After years of facing criticism over his playoff performances in Toronto, Mitch Marner delivered one of the most memorable games of his career for the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 3 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.

Facing the Carolina Hurricanes, Marner put on a second-period show that not only changed the game but also earned him a place in the NHL record books.

Mitch Marner’s Historic Feat Turns Heads

Marner scored a natural hat trick, three consecutive goals, in just 6 minutes and 10 seconds during the second period. In doing so, he broke a Stanley Cup Final record that had stood for 69 years. The previous mark belonged to Montreal Canadiens legend Maurice “Rocket” Richard, who scored three goals in 6 minutes and 21 seconds back in 1957.

The Vegas star wasn’t finished there.

Earlier in the period, Marner also recorded a secondary assist on Tomas Hertl’s opening power-play goal. That gave him four points in a single period, tying a Stanley Cup Final record that had stood since 1919 when Seattle Metropolitans forward Frank Foyston accomplished the feat.

Marner’s incredible night continued what has been a dominant postseason. Through 19 playoff games, he leads the NHL with 28 points, including 10 goals and 18 assists.

The reaction across the hockey world was immediate. Sports columnist Steve Simmons was quick to make his Conn Smythe pick, writing, “There is your Conn Smythe Trophy winner – Mitch Marner.”

NHL analyst Scott Laughlin kept it simple, posting, “Going off!!!” along with three hat (trick) emojis. The NHL’s official account also joined the celebration, saying, “MITCH MARNER CAN’T BE STOPPED RIGHT NOW! #StanleyCup.”

Others focused on the dramatic turnaround in Marner’s playoff reputation. Analyst Jeff Veillette highlighted the contrast between Marner’s playoff production in Toronto and his current run in Vegas, writing, “Marner never scored more than two goals in a playoff series in Toronto. Never more than three in a playoff run. Nothing matters. Embrace the meteor.”

Analyst Drew Livingstone highlighted the historic nature of the achievement, saying, “Mitch Marner just did something that hasn’t been done in 107 years!!!”

Former NHL player Ryan Whitney took the opportunity to take a playful jab at Toronto’s decision to move on, writing, “Hahahahha Marner again. Conn Smythe. Run out of town and has his second hat trick of the playoffs. Toronto LOL.”

The game was just as dramatic as Marner’s performance. His second-period hat trick helped Vegas build a 4-0 lead, but Carolina scored four times in the third period to force overtime. The Golden Knights eventually won 5-4 in double overtime on Shea Theodore’s game-winner to take a 2-1 series lead.

Despite the late drama, the night belonged to Marner, who continues to lead the NHL in playoff scoring and strengthen his Conn Smythe case.
