Hall of Famer Chris Pronger Has Some Blunt Advice for Philadelphia Flyers Brass

Chris Pronger questions the Flyers’ direction as losses pile up and injuries expose deeper issues in Philadelphia’s push to stay competitive.

The Philadelphia Flyers remain in the playoff mix, but recent results have raised concerns about direction. Injuries and subsequent roster changes have left them vulnerable in the second half of the season. Losses are piling up, and their patience is being tested. Their situation made a recent comment from a Hall of Famer stand out even more.

Hall of Famer Chris Pronger Sends Clear Rebuild Message to Flyers Management

Chris Pronger shared his thoughts on the Flyers’ direction, and his message was direct. The former Flyers defenseman and Hall of Famer posted on X, “If you are gonna rebuild, then take it down to the studs. San Jose and Chicago have done that and now are working their way back up with superstars in tow.”

His message landed at a time when Philadelphia is stuck between competing and rebuilding, with no clear answer yet on which path the team has chosen.

The Flyers sit at 22-17-8 and, with their current six-game losing streak, remain in the middle of the Metropolitan Division. Their record keeps them close, but their overall play has dropped. They average just under three goals per game, which puts pressure on their defense and goaltending.

Newly acquired forward Trevor Zegras has been one of the more reliable offensive pieces, and Travis Konecny continues to create chances at five-on-five. Still, defensive lapses and special teams problems continue to show up too often.

Those issues were clear in the 6-3 loss to the New York Rangers on Saturday. Philadelphia allowed three goals on the first three shots, prompting an early goalie change. From that point, the Flyers were chasing the game. Mika Zibanejad scored three goals, while Artemi Panarin added two.

Konecny, Travis Sanheim, and Zegras each recorded a goal and an assist, but the early damage proved too much to overcome. This loss was the team’s sixth in a row, and they were outscored 31-12 during that stretch.

Injuries have made things more difficult. Dan Vladar is day-to-day, and Rodrigo Abols, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Bobby Brink are on injured reserve. Meanwhile, Tyson Foerster is out for the season. Lane Pederson, Hunter McDonald, and Aleksei Kolosov were among the players recalled as the roster continued to change. Management has also stayed active with waivers, minor moves, and trades, including the Dec. 31 deal that sent Egor Zamula out in exchange for Philip Tomasino.

Head coach Rick Tocchet, who took over in May 2025, has been open about the challenge ahead. After accepting the job, he said, “I’ve always been a Flyer at heart and have taken that passion and energy that embodies this city and organization with me throughout my career.” He added, “We have a lot of work to do and much to accomplish,” while stressing belief in the process moving forward.

The Flyers return to action on Jan. 19 against the Vegas Golden Knights. The focus will be on starting stronger and tightening up defensively. Vegas brings a deep lineup led by Jack Eichel, which will test Philadelphia early.
