The season for the Washington Capitals has come to a close after they were defeated in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals by the Carolina Hurricanes.
Carolina’s 3-1 victory at Capital One Arena officially drew the curtains on Washington’s quest for their first Stanley Cup since 2018, meaning they’ve advanced past the second round of the postseason literally on one occasion during Alex Ovechkin’s career.
It also brings an end to an incredible campaign for the Capitals, who not only saw Ovechkin break Wayne Gretzky’s goal-scoring record but also earn the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
Capitals Fans Disappointed After Their Season Ends Early… Again
The Capitals will have to wait another season to try and get Ovechkin the second Stanley Cup of his career after the loss to the Hurricanes.
One fan believes the season was for naught, saying, “Another year wasted. This wasn’t a conference champion team in the playoffs.”
Another fan believed Washington isn’t suited for playoff hockey, saying, “We aren’t built for a long playoff run. Too old and a lot of passengers.”
This fan openly expressed sadness, saying, “I’ve seen a lot of disappointing playoff performances as a Caps fan but this takes the cake. After such an amazing season with Ovi’s record to come out and play this series like this is just the saddest I’ve been.”
Another fan knew all good things come to an end, saying, “Life is like a Monumental season…and seasons like this weren’t meant to last.”
This fan looked ahead and wasn’t sure if the Capitals would be able to attract big-name free-agents, saying, “The problem with the Caps is that DC is not exactly a hotbed of free agency. So I don’t know if they can sign a Sam Bennett or a Mitch Marner, but they should try!!”
Not everyone was despondent, as this fan expressed optimism for the future, saying, “Thank you for an amazing season boys. Sucks it had to end this way but I love this team and I’m proud to call myself a fan. I will forever be grateful for this season.”
Where Do The Capitals Go From Here?
The good news for the Capitals is that they put together one of the best seasons in franchise history, especially with how 2023-24 resulted in them barely earning a playoff spot and getting swept early on.
The bad news is that Ovechkin will be a year older at this point next season, and he’s not going to play forever. How much longer he decides to play in the NHL, considering his contract is up in 2026, remains to be seen.
There are several positives for the Capitals to take with them into the offseason, including the breakout campaign of players like Connor McMichael and Logan Thompson. But the disappointment of the loss is going to linger for a while.
