‘He’s Seeing The Moves’ — Capitals HC Reveals Alex Ovechkin’s Stance as Washington Lands Alex Tuch, Jordan Kyrou

The Washington Capitals didn’t wait around to make a statement. By bringing in Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou, they made it clear they’re building a roster capable of chasing the Stanley Cup while Alex Ovechkin weighs his future.

The longtime captain has already said his decision will come in July, making every move by the organization part of a much bigger picture. With that in mind, Spencer Carbery’s latest update offered the clearest glimpse yet into where Ovechkin’s mindset stands.

Spencer Carbery on Alex Ovechkin After Capitals Add Tuch, Kyrou

While Ovechkin has not yet decided whether he will return for another NHL season, Carbery indicated the Capitals captain has been closely following Washington’s aggressive offseason from abroad.

Speaking on 106.7 The Fan’s “Grant and Danny” show, Carbery said Ovechkin is currently vacationing with his family in Turkey but remains engaged with everything happening around the team.

Responding to questions about whether the new acquisitions had impacted Ovechkin’s plans, Carbery said the decision is still pending.

“I spoke to him this morning. He’s on vacation with his family and working out there. But at this point, no. There’s been no decision. He’s just spending time with his family and trying to make the best decision. And when he tells us he’s ready to decide, we’ll be right there for him. So there’s no timeline.”

Carbery also revealed that Ovechkin has been encouraged by Washington’s aggressive approach this summer.

“He did mention and say today that he’s following and seeing the moves and was really happy for the organization about acquiring Jordan and Alex.”

These comments align with Ovechkin’s previously stated priority. Before leaving for vacation, the longtime Capitals captain made it clear that his decision would depend heavily on whether Washington remained committed to building a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. He has also said he plans to announce his future in July after discussing everything with his family.

Washington’s front office has backed that message with action.

The Capitals acquired Kyrou from the St. Louis Blues by sending Connor McMichael, prospect Milton Gastrin, and the No. 16 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. One day later, they completed a sign-and-trade with the Buffalo Sabres for Tuch after Buffalo signed him to an 8-year, $84 million extension.

The additions immediately strengthen Washington’s top six. Kyrou brings elite transition speed and offensive creativity, while Tuch adds size, net-front presence, and a strong two-way game.

Both players are under long-term contracts, giving the Capitals proven talent beyond the current season while also keeping the team competitive if Ovechkin returns.

Financially, Washington remains in a comfortable position despite the blockbuster deals. The team still projects to have enough cap space to accommodate Ovechkin’s current $9.5 million cap hit should he decide to play another season.

For now, the Capitals have done everything they can to support another championship run. The next move belongs to Ovechkin, and based on Carbery’s latest update, that answer is expected to arrive in July.
