The Vancouver Canucks are fully and firmly bang in the middle of a rebuild after a frustrating year led to a total overhaul of the front office and raised fresh questions about where the franchise is headed.
With the organization leaning harder into a rebuild, Thatcher Demko’s future has suddenly become one of the hottest talking points around the franchise, especially as concerns about his health continue to hover over any potential move.
Jeff Marek Raises Health Concerns as Red Wings Get Linked to Thatcher Demko
The Detroit Red Wings look desperate to finally push their rebuild over the hump and back into serious playoff territory. This has created real buzz around a possible trade for Demko, but there’s still a big catch hanging over the entire situation: teams love the talent, yet nobody seems fully comfortable with the gamble until the star goalie proves he can get back on the ice with 100% health.
Demko’s name has surfaced heavily in trade discussions because Vancouver still has a brief window to move him before his full no-movement clause activates on July 1. The 30-year-old goaltender recently signed a three-year, $25.5 million extension carrying an $8.5 million cap hit, but his recent hip surgery has complicated the market considerably.
Detroit has emerged as one of the most logical landing spots. Steve Yzerman’s group owns significant cap flexibility, lacks a proven elite long-term starter, and has enough roster depth and draft capital to build a compelling package.
The Red Wings also believe acquiring a veteran goalie could buy additional development time for top prospects Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine.
Still, NHL insider Jeff Marek made it clear during an appearance on the Sekeres & Price Show that health remains the defining issue surrounding any potential deal. Marek explained that interested teams first need proof that Demko can consistently return to form before surrendering premium assets.
“That’s the key, right?” Marek said. “If you’re any team out there that’s looking at Thatcher Demko, before you decide on a price, you have to figure out if he can play.”
Marek added that Demko does not currently feel like a realistic summer trade candidate due to uncertainty about his recovery timeline. “I just think that right now, that’s too risky for anybody,” he explained, while noting that a healthy Demko still ranks among the NHL’s best goaltenders.

Detroit also has a unique connection to the situation. Demko spends much of his offseason in Michigan, and his wife is from the state, potentially making the Red Wings one of the few destinations he could be open to if trade protection eventually becomes a factor.

Financially, the Red Wings are positioned comfortably for a major swing. Detroit currently holds more than $32 million in projected cap space before making offseason roster adjustments. Absorbing Demko’s full contract would still leave room for other extensions.
The real debate centers on durability. When healthy, Demko has produced Vezina-level numbers and finished among the league leaders in goals saved above expected during his peak seasons.
However, injuries have limited him to more than 50 games only twice in his NHL career, and with an average of nearly 21 games in the last two seasons, creating a massive risk for any team considering a franchise-altering move.
