Ex-Canucks GM Mike Gillis Reveals Why Maple Leafs Job Failed to Pan Out

The Toronto Maple Leafs were ready for a major shake-up after a frustrating year, which led to fresh questions about leadership, accountability, and the franchise’s long-term direction. With pressure building around the organization, MLSE explored several experienced hockey minds while deciding just how bold the front-office reset needed to be.

As the Leafs fired their general manager, Brad Treliving, and his replacement search gained traction, one veteran NHL executive quietly became a fascinating wildcard tied to big-picture structural changes.

While they eventually went with John Chayka, former Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis, who was also on the shortlist, finally pulled back the curtain on his conversations with Toronto and why the talks never fully crossed the finish line.

Mike Gillis Explains Why Maple Leafs Talks Never Reached the Finish Line

Gillis confirmed during an appearance on the Sekeres & Price podcast that he did interview with the Maple Leafs, but clarified the discussions were never as close as many reports suggested. According to Gillis, the disconnect centered around the role he envisioned for himself inside a modern NHL organization.

“Most of the reporting was inaccurate around that piece. I’ve been pretty clear that I think there’s a role for me in an organization, but it’s a very specific one,” Gillis explained. “It’s not that I wouldn’t do it, but I don’t really think that a really well-constructed organization, that guys my age should be on the front lines on a daily basis. That’s my opinion.”

Rather than pursuing a traditional general manager position, Gillis described a broader executive role focused on organizational planning, structure, and long-term strategy. He emphasized that his interest revolved around building systems and identifying the right people for influential positions throughout hockey operations.

“There’s a role that is highly constructive in how you go about things, how you structure things and how you think about things, and the people that you put in certain chairs that are influential in your success,” Gillis said. “So yeah, there’s the role like that. And I made it pretty clear early on that I thought that’s where I would be best suited at this particular point in time.”

As conversations continued, Gillis said it became clear Toronto planned to move in another direction organizationally. “When the Toronto Maple Leafs weren’t going to fill that role, it became apparent. So it wasn’t the right fit,” he said.

Gillis was also tied to rumors involving former Toronto captain Mats Sundin, who played under him in Vancouver during the final stretch of his career. According to Gillis, Sundin would have joined the organization in some capacity under his management, though he did take the role with Chayka’s front office.

“Most definitely, if he wanted to be,” Gillis said while discussing Sundin’s potential involvement. He praised veteran leaders who bring stability during difficult stretches, comparing that influence to the role Daniel and Henrik Sedin now play within Vancouver’s organization.

Gillis also revealed one of the more unique ideas he hoped to introduce inside an NHL front office. He described a strategy-focused executive role built specifically around studying weaknesses across the league and identifying future roster opportunities before competitors reacted.

“That would be their job,” Gillis explained. “Here’s their weakness. This is what they’re going to be looking for. How do we design our summer signings? How do we go and get a piece necessary?”

Toronto eventually hired John Chayka as general manager while bringing Sundin back as senior executive advisor, officially closing the door on the Gillis speculation.

The Leafs have the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, so it will be interesting to see how they plan their path forward under Chayka, who will have to keep Matthews’ contract window in perspective.
