The blockbuster trade that sent Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers over Father’s Day weekend sent shockwaves across the NHL.
While fans immediately focused on the headline-grabbing reunion with brother Matthew Tkachuk, Brady has now opened up about the deeper reasons behind his desire to make the move to South Florida.
Why Brady Tkachuk Wanted Out of Ottawa
After eight seasons in Ottawa, Brady Tkachuk was looking for a fresh opportunity. While the Senators made it back to the playoffs, consecutive first-round exits made it clear the team still had work to do before becoming a true Stanley Cup contender.
Florida offered a different situation altogether. The Panthers have reached three Stanley Cup Finals and won two championships in the last four seasons, making them one of the NHL’s top teams.
Playing alongside his brother Matthew for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics also had a major impact on Brady. After helping the United States win a gold medal, the idea of teaming up in the NHL became even more appealing.
Speaking on the Wingmen podcast, Brady explained that the decision went beyond simply wanting to play with his brother.
“If we weren’t even brothers, Florida’s always been the toughest games these last couple of years. Just the way you guys play, the winning background. It’s all about winning, and you have guys who came from different spots, different teams, and found a lot of success. I made this decision, taking you out of it. It wasn’t about you; you know how much I love you,” Brady said to Matthew.
“It’s just every single time after playing you guys, it’s like holy cow, that team is incredible. They have a chance to win every single year. I think that was that,” he added.
“Ottawa truly shaped me into the person I am today.”

Those comments offer perhaps the clearest insight yet into why the former Senators captain was willing to waive his protection and facilitate the move.
The Panthers paid a hefty price to acquire Tkachuk, sending Ottawa a package that includes the No. 9 and No. 25 picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, a 2027 second-round pick, and a top-10 protected first-round selection in 2029.
Importantly, Florida managed to complete the deal without subtracting from its current roster.
That means Tkachuk joins a lineup already featuring some of the league’s top talent, including captain Aleksander Barkov, sniper Sam Reinhart, and longtime Panthers forward Carter Verhaeghe.
The most intriguing storyline, however, is the long-awaited NHL reunion between Brady and Matthew. Opposing teams will now have to deal with two of hockey’s most relentless power forwards on the same roster, players capable of producing elite offense while making life miserable for opponents every night.
