The conversation in Ottawa has quickly shifted from the drama surrounding Brady Tkachuk’s departure to praise for how the Senators handled the aftermath.
Rather than holding onto the No. 9 overall pick acquired in the blockbuster deal, general manager Steve Staios moved quickly, sending it to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for 23-year-old winger William Eklund and promising prospects Kasper Halttunen and Brandon Svoboda.
The move not only addressed an immediate roster need but also accelerated Ottawa’s plans to remain competitive, earning praise from one of the most respected Hall of Famers in hockey.
Senators Earn Praise for William Eklund Trade
The speed of Staios’ response caught many around the NHL off guard and quickly earned praise from Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Pronger. The former star defenseman, who has been involved in his share of franchise-altering moves, took to social media to commend Ottawa’s front office for making the most of the assets acquired in the Brady Tkachuk trade.
“Well, there is the first domino from the Brady Tkachuk trade. Pick up a young evolving forward in William Eklund, plus they still have two 1st-round picks. One of which they can still utilize in another move. More to come, I am sure,” Pronger wrote.
Pronger’s comments reflect what many around the league are thinking. Instead of treating the assets received for Tkachuk as the final return, Ottawa immediately put them to work in an effort to remain competitive.
Eklund gives Ottawa a skilled young top-six forward coming off a 38-assist season and is only beginning to enter his prime. His vision and playmaking ability could make him an ideal fit alongside Tim Stützle in the Senators’ top six.
The financial aspect of the move is also appealing. Eklund recently signed a three-year extension worth $16.8 million, carrying a manageable $5.6 million cap hit through 2029. Combined with the flexibility gained from moving Tkachuk’s contract, Ottawa now has additional room to address other needs across the roster.
What makes the trade especially attractive for the Senators is that they didn’t simply land Eklund. They also added two promising prospects while retaining valuable draft capital, including Florida’s No. 25 overall pick in 2026, a protected 2029 first-round selection, and a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
By acting quickly, Staios ensured the organization avoided the uncertainty and frustration that often follow the departure of a franchise player. Instead, the Senators added young talent, improved their depth, and sent a clear message that they’re still focused on winning.
