Brady Tkachuk Makes Feelings Crystal Clear on Maple Leafs Fans Booing Mitch Marner in Toronto

Brady Tkachuk reacts to Leafs fans booing Mitch Marner during his return to Toronto with the Golden Knights.

NHL players’ returns often bring strong reactions, especially in markets with passionate fans. Mitch Marner’s return to Toronto became more about the crowd than the scoreboard. The moment reopened conversations about loyalty, expectations, and how quickly fan sentiment can change in Toronto.

That reaction later drew a direct response from an NHL captain who weighed in on the situation.

Senators’ Captain Brady Tkachuk Shares Honest Take on Toronto Fans Booing Mitch Marner

Marner’s first game back at Scotiabank Arena with the Vegas Golden Knights was just as expected after his turbulent exit from Toronto. Some fans were still upset due to his July 2025 trade out of the city and resorted to boos while he was playing. One particular fan tried to show him a jersey, calling Marner a “sellout,” near the visitor’s tunnel. However, Marner’s teammate foiled the fans’ plans and protected him.

Marner was booed on several occasions, including when he stepped onto the ice for warmups and during his early shifts. However, there was also a brief ovation when the Leafs played his tribute video on the Jumbotron.

The crowd’s reaction became a topic on Episode 12 of Wingmen with Matthew and Brady Tkachuk. Brady Tkachuk shared his thoughts on Leafs fans booing Marner, saying,  “Everyone’s right to their own opinion. They paid the tickets, they watch.”

Brady also pointed to Marner’s long commitment to the team, calling him “a guy who was there for nine years and probably gave blood, sweat, and tears for that organization, his hometown team.” Tkachuk added, “I just think it’s crazy you go from nine years of knowing an important piece of your team. Then all of a sudden, he comes in on a different team, and people just turn their back on it. That’s the beauty of sports, they hate you eventually.”

Marner left Toronto in a July 2025 sign-and-trade that sent him to Vegas, with the Maple Leafs receiving Nicolas Roy and future assets. Drafted fourth overall by Toronto in 2015, Marner spent nine seasons with the team and was one of the best playmakers in the team’s history. His departure has left a noticeable gap in Toronto’s forward group, as they are struggling this season.

And we saw that gap in that game too, as Vegas went on to beat Toronto 6-3. Marner, playing his first game in Toronto since his trade, did not register a point. Still, Mark Stone and Jack Eich helped power the Golden Knights’ offense and outscored the Leafs.

Now 28, Marner has produced well in his first season with Vegas, recording 12 goals and 40 assists for 52 points in 52 games. Known for his hockey IQ, quick hands, and playmaking, he continues to drive the offense and create chances while adjusting to a new team and environment.
