Currently with the Florida Panthers, Brad Marchand could be one of the most talked-about free agents this offseason. With his contract set to expire on July 1, speculation is swirling about where he might land next.
According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, one surprising possibility is the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Brad Marchand Could Be a Maple Leafs Target in Free Agency
Two wins away from defending their Stanley Cup championship, the Panthers haven’t ruled out re-signing Marchand. But with other high-priority free agents like Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad in the picture, it’s likely Marchand tests the open market. LeBrun reports that the veteran winger may focus more on total contract value than annual salary.
The Maple Leafs stand out among the suitors. Marchand grew up a Leafs fan, something he openly admitted during the second-round series between Florida and Toronto. That emotional connection, combined with the team’s need for gritty, postseason-tested talent, has fueled the speculation.

Marchand isn’t just another veteran hitting free agency. He’s a playoff performer, a former Stanley Cup champion, and one of the most frustrating players for opponents. In Game 7 against the Maple Leafs this year, he tallied three points and helped eliminate the Leafs, again.
With Mitch Marner reportedly on his way out and the team’s front office signaling a shift in philosophy, Marchand could fit right into the Maple Leafs’ new identity. GM Brad Treliving has already spoken about changing the team’s “DNA” after repeated playoff failures.
According to Chris Johnston, another respected NHL insider, the Leafs will likely push for Marchand if he becomes available. At 37, this may be his last big contract, and the Maple Leafs could offer more than just salary; there is also the commercial appeal of a high-profile market, where brand deals and endorsements could sweeten the pot.
This isn’t the first time the Leafs have gone after a major name. In 2016, they reportedly made a serious pitch to Steven Stamkos, who ultimately stayed with the Tampa Bay Lightning. But with Marchand nearing the end of his career and looking to make the most of it, the situation might play out differently this time.
Marchand has also shown he can still produce. He’s posted 18 points in 20 playoff games and elevated Florida’s third line into a nightmare matchup. Even after multiple surgeries last year, his impact is undeniable.
Marchand’s Future With The Panthers Still Undecided
Despite the rumors, Marchand hasn’t closed the door on staying in Florida. He told Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, “Anything’s on the table. I’m going to listen to anything.” The Panthers acquired him from the Bruins at the trade deadline for a conditional second-round pick, which now looks like a steal.
Since joining the Panthers, Marchand has become an integral part of the team. His leadership and playoff experience have added a unique edge to an already strong lineup. His role in pushing the team through multiple playoff rounds can’t be overstated.
Yet with the Panthers likely prioritizing younger talent like Bennett, who leads the playoffs in scoring, and Ekblad, Marchand may be the odd man out.
If that happens, the Maple Leafs could be ready and waiting. And this time, the interest may be mutual.
