‘God Help Us’ — Panthers’ $32M Brad Marchand Contract Leaves Bruins Fanbase in Flat-Out Denial

Boston Bruins fans cannot believe their luck after former captain Brad Marchand re-signed with the Florida Panthers for six seasons.

The Florida Panthers continue to party with the Stanley Cup after repeating as champions with their second consecutive Cup Final victory over the Edmonton Oilers. One of the players who helped to make it possible was veteran forward Brad Marchand, whom the Panthers acquired at the NHL Trade Deadline from the Boston Bruins. He not only scored 10 postseason goals, but also scored six of them in the Cup Final.

He was poised to become an unrestricted free agent, and there was doubt that the Panthers could retain all of their high-priced players who were set to hit the market.

However, Panthers general manager Bill Zito has taken those fan concerns and fed them to a pack of rats, successfully re-signing not only Conn Smythe Trophy winner Sam Bennett and longtime defenseman Aaron Ekblad, but also announcing an eye-popping six-year extension for Marchand.

Bruins Fans in Shambles After Brad Marchand Re-Signs for 6 Seasons With Panthers

Fans of the Boston Bruins, who had to watch as their team moved not only Marchand to the Panthers but also traded Brandon Carlo, Charlie Coyle, and Trent Frederic during the season, cannot believe what they’re witnessing after initially holding out hope that Marchand would consider returning to Boston during the offseason.

One fan couldn’t believe what transpired and said, while speaking about Boston GM Don Sweeney, “Unbelievable. And the Bruins wouldn’t give him a three-year deal? What in the world is Don Sweeney doing? God help us.”

Another fan ripped Marchand and wrote, “I just lost a lot of respect for Marchand, what a hypocrite.”

Keeping with that theme, one hockey fan said, “Marchie does a deal with Florida instead. Some captain.”

A Boston fan demanded major changes in the Bruins’ management and said, “Sweeney and Neely need to be fired. They traded players that gave their all as a Bruin and signed players who came for a payday.”

Another fan threatened to change his allegiance and commented, “Hell ya Marchand, I might just ditch the Bruins after 37 years at this point.”

One Boston Bruins fan targeted Sweeney and team president Cam Neely and wrote, “I am sure Sweeney and Neely will sign a washed-up 32 or 33-year-old b** to a 6-year contract.”

Brad Marchand Is a Panther for Six More Seasons

Zito has made a masterful effort as GM to keep all his top players from a championship run together for as long as possible. Many fans and experts had not anticipated that he would be able to re-sign Bennett, Ekblad, and now Marchand.

Marchand has already been embraced by the Panthers fan base, and the fact that he played such a pivotal role in helping them win the Stanley Cup only endeared him to the community further. There may not be any other team in recent memory that is as well-equipped to once again win the Stanley Cup as the Panthers, who will be attempting for the first three-peat since the New York Islanders of the early 1980s.
