The Toronto Maple Leafs made it clear at the trade deadline that they were thinking about the future, but one move in particular is already back under the spotlight. It is all because of what Bobby McMann is doing right now with the Seattle Kraken.
The deal that sent McMann to the Kraken has quickly become one of the most talked-about trades from the 2026 NHL trade deadline. While Toronto’s goal was to stockpile future assets, the forward’s explosive start in Seattle is raising concerns that the Maple Leafs may have undervalued a rising talent.
Toronto’s Strategy: Future Assets vs. Present Production
Toronto dealt McMann in exchange for a 2027 conditional second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick. Since arriving in Seattle, he has been given a top-six role along with significant power-play minutes, and he has taken full advantage.
In his first five games with the Kraken, McMann has racked up 4 goals and 6 points (1.20 points per game). This is a significant jump compared to his production in Toronto, where he posted 19 goals and 32 points in 60 games (0.53 points per game). In simple terms, he is producing at more than double the rate he did with the Maple Leafs.
He is now just one goal behind Los Angeles Kings forward Artemi Panarin, who leads all undrafted players with 25 goals this season. McMann was not the only player moved as part of Toronto’s deadline strategy. General manager Brad Treliving also dealt Scott Laughton to the Kings and Nicolas Roy to the Colorado Avalanche, bringing in a collection of future draft picks.
Both players have shown flashes with their new teams, further adding to the perception that Toronto may have given up more immediate value than expected.
To be fair, the Maple Leafs did accomplish their goal of stockpiling assets. They added valuable picks, including a potential first-rounder, setting themselves up for future flexibility. But for fans watching in real time, the optics are tough.
Toronto has struggled at times with secondary scoring, which is exactly the area where McMann is now thriving in Seattle. Seeing him produce right away, including a strong debut performance, has only amplified the criticism.
