Alas, there’s little left for the Toronto Maple Leafs to play for as we approach the end of the regular season. A lot was expected of these Leafs in the post-Mitch Marner era, but Toronto failed to take off, leading to a high-level front-office shift with general manager Brad Treliving being fired, leaving the organization at a critical turning point.
A late-season MCL injury to the team’s captain, Auston Matthews, only accelerated the team’s slide, forcing a rethink of its long-term direction.
With this backdrop, attention is firmly on Matthews’ future, as insiders begin speculating on potential fits for the superstar in a franchise-altering trade.
Auston Matthews Trade Buzz Links Sharks and Mammoth As Possible Landing Spots
Matthews now sits at the center of growing offseason talk as the Maple Leafs enter a period of uncertainty after missing the playoffs for the first time in ten years. Currently, the team has a 32-31-13 record and 77 points, and the result led to sweeping changes that included Treliving losing his job.
With a new leadership group expected to shape the next phase, questions around roster direction have naturally followed.
Matthews remains under contract through the 2027-28 season on a four-year, $53 million deal that carries a $13.25 million cap hit, and his full no-movement clause gives him complete control over any potential move.
Despite that, speculation has grown due to the team’s struggles, his injury, and a broader reset that could take place under a new front office. The situation has turned from a quiet discussion into a topic that insiders are now addressing openly.
One such voice pointed to possible destinations while making it clear that nothing is close to certain. Speaking on the Barn Burner podcast, NHL insider Darren Dreger said, “Impossible to say definitively, San Jose would make some sense to me, I wouldn’t call them a frontrunner, but spitballing… I think Utah’s gonna be a big player here moving forward.”
The San Jose Sharks are a young team that has seen a rise this season after a breakout year for Macklin Celebrini. The Utah Mammoth, meanwhile, worth a staggering $1.45 billion per Forbes, are playing their second season and in a fast-tracked rebuilding phase. Both teams have the financial strength and long-term ambition that can accommodate Matthews’ contract.
The timing of these rumors also connects directly to Matthews’ season-ending injury. He suffered a Grade 3 MCL tear on March 14 against Florida, which required surgery and ended his season. The lack of response from his Leafs teammates in the aftermath of the hit also raised eyebrows regarding Matthews’ relationship with his teammates.
Without him, Toronto struggled badly, going 4-4-2 in the games that followed. That downturn, and their earlier 8-game losing skid, played a direct role in the team’s elimination on April 2 after a loss to San Jose.
Even with the noise, there are strong reasons to believe a move remains unlikely. Matthews is still viewed as one of the league’s top players, and the organization has built its identity around him for years. However, with Mitch Marner already gone and management in transition, the idea of a larger roster reset continues to gain attention.
