Alex Ovechkin Breaks Silence on Washington Capitals’ Trade Deadline, Pulls No Punches on John Carlson Trade

The Washington Capitals’ surprise move to trade John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks has caused quite a buzz. Fans on social media are in two camps: Caps fans believe their defensive backbone is gone, while Ducks fans believe that top draft picks were too much of a gamble for the veteran D-man.

However, for Alex Ovechkin, it marks the end of an era. The Capitals captain is struggling to come to terms with Carlson’s exit.

Washington Capitals’ John Carlson Trade Takes a Toll on Alex Ovechkin

Carlson’s long and eventful association with the Capitals has finally come to an end out of the blue. The defenseman leaves behind an unrivalled legacy. Every corner of the Capital One Arena is privy to his excellence spanning more than a decade. He leaves the Capitals’ ranks as the all-time leader among defensemen in goals (166), assists (605), points (771), power-play points (273), and games played (1,143).

While every member of the Capitals community will feel the emotional weight of Carlson’s departure, Ovechkin’s words struck a chord.

It is safe to say that Ovechkin is the very cornerstone of the franchise. When Ovi was chasing the elusive Wayne Gretzky record with a view to toppling the GOAT to become the all-time leading goal-scorer in the NHL, the Capitals as a team came to be fashioned around Ovi’s personal goal.

However, today, the Ovechkin-Capitals partnership has been put to the test; the captain is not on board with the management’s decision to part ways with Carlson.

Ovechkin and Carlson share a camaraderie that goes back years, which has been brought to a sudden end. Having spent years donning the same jerseys, Ovi is grappling with this monumental change. It could very well be the “saddest day of his career”, Ovechkin told the media.

The question remains: Will the 36-year-old’s exit have ramifications for Ovechkin’s career? The 40-year-old is on the cusp of an expiring contract, fanning doubts over his NHL future. For Ovi, the question is not an easy one to answer. For now, he is open to seeing how things unfold. “I don’t know. I’m still here, so we’ll see. We’ll see what’s going to happen. It’s a hard one,” Ovechkin said when asked about his future in the immediate aftermath of the trade.

As a stark contrast to the somber mood at the Capitals, Hall of Famer Chris Pronger took to social media to share just how valuable a defenseman like Carlson could be for the Ducks.

According to Pronger, the 36-year-old is the kind of addition the Ducks’ blueline needed. “John Carlson brings a championship pedigree, puck-moving ability, and a QB for their 2nd power play unit. Exactly the type of experience their D corps needs.”

Carlson has constantly defied his age through his performance. This season, the 36-year-old has 46 points in 55 games. Coupled with veteran leadership and extensive playoff experience, the Ducks have got a winner in him right there.

Over on Washington’s side of things, Ovechkin and Tom Wilson are the only remaining members of their 2018 Stanley Cup-winning team.
