Alex Ovechkin Breaks Silence on NHL Future Months After Wife Anastasia’s Statement Turned Heads

Alex Ovechkin dismissed retirement rumors as 'pure nonsense' while leaving his NHL future open beyond 2026 and chasing the 900-goal milestone.

The retirement rumors swirling around Alex Ovechkin have reached a fever pitch. But the Washington Capitals superstar isn’t ready to hang up his skates just yet, and he wants everyone to know it.

Alex Ovechkin Pushes Back Against Retirement Talk

Speculation about Ovechkin’s potential retirement picked up steam in May. That’s when a Russian outlet quoted his wife, Anastasia, saying their family might return to Russia after his contract ends. Around the same time, the Capitals’ ticket office mistakenly sent an email to fans referring to next season as his final year, adding more fuel to the fire.

However, Ovechkin quickly cleared things up while addressing reporters in Moscow, following his appearance in the annual “Match of the Year,” a showcase between Russian NHL players and KHL All-Stars.

“She said maybe we’ll come and play in Russia,” he told reporters. “But it was just a ‘maybe.’ No one mentioned a specific date. It’s all nonsense that you guys are twisting and putting Nastya in a position where it sounds like she said I’m playing my last NHL season. Let’s just wait and see!”

The veteran star wasn’t thrilled with how the media portrayed his wife’s comments, calling the situation unfair and exaggerated. When asked if he could see himself playing beyond 2026, Ovechkin opened the door: “Anything’s possible. I’m not saying no, but I’m not saying yes either.”

A source close to him echoed the same sentiment. They told RG Media that Ovechkin would never continue playing just to hang on. “If he feels he can no longer play at the highest level, he won’t continue just for the sake of staying,” the source said.

Despite the swirling rumors, Ovechkin, now 39, had another strong year in 2024-25. He scored 44 goals and 29 assists in 65 games, finishing with a plus-15 rating. The Capitals topped the Eastern Conference but were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs.

Now back in Russia for the offseason, Ovechkin said he’s feeling fresh again after a vacation in Turkey. “Played some volleyball, got good rest, and felt fresh out there today. All good!” he laughed.

What Does Ovechkin’s Future Hold Beyond 900 Goals?

The upcoming season will be a big one for Ovechkin. He sits at 897 career goals, just three away from the 900-goal milestone, something no other player in NHL history has achieved. He’s also creeping closer to 1,700 total points.

If he does stick around in the NHL, it’s hard to picture him in anything but a Capitals sweater. He’s been with Washington for his entire 20-season career. Still, a return to Dynamo Moscow, where he started, could be on the table if he heads back to Russia.

After the “Match of the Year,” reporters discussed the Capitals trading for Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin. Ovechkin grinned and said, “If that ever happened, it’d be amazing. If not, we’ll fight with the guys we have.”

Though his current contract runs through the 2025-26 season, Ovechkin clearly hasn’t decided what comes next. Right now, he isn’t making any promises. But he’s also not closing any doors. And with history still in his sights, the ride may not be over.
