Alex Ovechkin Continues To Defy Father Time Joining Yet Another Exclusive Club

Alex Ovechkin records a hat trick against the Utah Mammoth, setting an NHL record and keeping Capitals playoff hopes alive.

The Washington Capitals are fighting to stay in the playoff race while leaning on familiar production from their captain. Their season has not matched last year’s level, but they remain within reach of a wild-card spot.

At the center of that push is a player who continues to deliver in crucial moments. His latest performance has now added another rare achievement to his career.

Alex Ovechkin Hits Rare 40+ Milestone with Record Hat Trick Against Utah Mammoth

Alex Ovechkin delivered a big night in a 7-4 win over the Utah Mammoth on Thursday, recording his 34th career hat trick. He has set a new NHL record by doing it against 21 different franchises.

Washington trailed early but responded in the second period, when Ovechkin scored twice to tie the game and shift the momentum. The team carried that momentum into the third period and closed out the win with better execution.

This performance also placed Ovechkin in a rare group of players who have recorded multiple hat tricks in a single season after turning 40. He joins Johnny Bucyk and Gordie Howe as the only players to reach that mark at that age. It highlights how uncommon it is for a player to maintain this level of scoring production late in his career.

A post from BarDown highlighted this achievement on X. It compared Ovechkin’s season with past greats and underlined how rare this level of scoring remains at that stage.

Ovechkin continues to lead Washington’s offense this season with 29 goals and 56 points in 73 games. He is also one goal away from reaching his 20th 30-goal season, which would extend his own NHL record.

Earlier this month, he reached another major milestone when he scored his 1,000th combined career goal during a game against Colorado, becoming just the second player to reach that total alongside Wayne Gretzky.

There are still small details that stand out in his long career record. The New York Rangers are one of the teams against whom he has not scored a hat trick, even though he has scored 46 goals in 79 regular-season games against them. That detail adds an interesting note to a career filled with scoring success across the league.

Washington’s season has been inconsistent, with a 36-28-9 record that places them sixth in the Metropolitan Division. They are still within reach of a wild-card position but need a strong finish to stay in contention.

The team has averaged just over 3 goals per game, while their defensive play has kept them competitive in close games. Still, special teams have struggled at times.

As the regular season moves toward its final stretch, Ovechkin continues to provide offense for Washington. His latest milestone adds to an already long list of achievements and keeps him among the most productive players in the league.
