Washington started strong in the game, with Tom Wilson opening the scoring on a power-play goal assisted by John Carlson and Jakob Chychrun. Early in the second period, Ovechkin scored his 900th career goal with a backhand shot, also assisted by Chychrun.
Anthony Beauvillier and John Carlson added more goals for the Capitals, while Alexey Toropchenko scored a short-handed goal for St. Louis. Wilson later scored his second goal, helping Washington secure a 6-1 win.

“Of course it’s huge number. No one ever did it in NHL history and [to] be [the] first player ever do it. It’s a special moment… nice to get it in the home stand at home so the fans, the family can be here and yeah, it’s pretty cool.”
Ovechkin further explained that milestones do not add pressure.
“I just try to play a game, try to do best as I can…13 games or 14 games, you know, you have plenty of games left…so yeah, that’s nice to get it done,” Ovechkin said.
He also praised his teammates, saying, “We have an unbelievable locker room… they support me and I’m always going to be thankful for that support.”
Even at 40, Ovechkin remains a key player for Washington. This season, he has three goals and five assists in 13 games, with a positive plus/minus rating and around 18 minutes of ice time per game.
