3 Senators Who Missed the Mark in Game 2 OT Loss to Maple Leafs

It’s been a long time since the Toronto Maple Leafs have enjoyed a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but that’s what they have right now over their provincial rival Ottawa Senators.

Max Domi, the son of former Maple Leafs forward Tie Domi, scored his first-career Stanley Cup playoff overtime goal; his tally early in the extra session secured the victory for Toronto and ensured that they would take their show on the road with a comfortable 2-0 series lead over Ottawa.

3 Senators Who Missed The Mark in Game 2 OT Loss to Maple Leafs

    1) Linus Ullmark

The prize offseason acquisition for the Senators to finally bring stability to their crease may have worked out during the regular season, but his performance in the playoffs has been anything but clutch so far.

After getting torched for six goals against in Game 1 against the Leafs, Linus Ullmark allowed three goals on just 21 shots against in Game 2, finishing with a subpar .857 save percentage.

If the Senators have any chance to get back into this series, they’ll need much more out of Ullmark.

    2) Artem Zub

It was not a good night for the Senators’ defenseman, who not only contributed nothing offensively but was also a liability on the defensive end.

Artem Zub committed a team-high three giveaways as part of the loss to the Maple Leafs; he also took an ill-advised penalty in the opening 20 minutes of play that led to a power-play goal from Toronto’s John Tavares.

Zub is another player the Senators need more from if they have any shot at beating Toronto.

    3) David Perron

One of the veteran leaders on the Senators roster with valuable championship experience, David Perron, hasn’t come through points-wise for his club the way they need.

He has one lone assist so far in the two games the Senators have played, both losses. During the April 22 game, he went pointless and couldn’t manage a single shot on goal.

It also didn’t help his case that he committed a giveaway.

Maple Leafs Take 2-0 Series Lead Over Senators

Following their convincing 6-2 win over the Senators in Game 1, the Maple Leafs got out to a fast start on Tuesday, April 22, taking a quick 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Both Morgan Rielly and John Tavares scored for the Leafs; it was their second goal of the postseason, as they had both scored in the Game 1 victory.

However, the Senators fought their way back into the contest thanks to the first career playoff goal from captain Brady Tkachuk late in the second period, followed by the tying goal from Adam Gaudette with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.

But just minutes into the overtime session, it was Domi who sent the sellout crowd at Scotiabank Arena home happy:

Goaltender Joseph Woll won his second straight game, making 26 saves. Meanwhile, Ullmark has now lost both of his starts in his first postseason as a member of the Senators; he was victimized three times on just 21 shots.
