Trade buzz is growing louder surrounding New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton. Once considered a cornerstone of the Devils’ blue line, Hamilton has seen his future in New Jersey grow uncertain.
Despite still being one of the league’s more productive defensemen when healthy, back-to-back injury-shortened seasons, paired with a hefty $9 million cap hit, have made him a potential trade candidate.
With the Devils sitting just over $6 million in cap space, still needing to lock up restricted free agent Luke Hughes, and possibly looking to improve their forward scoring depth, Hamilton’s contract and role are naturally drawing speculation.
Among the teams linked to Hamilton are two Eastern Conference franchises: the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Columbus Blue Jackets, with consistent chatter also connecting him to the Detroit Red Wings.
Dougie Hamilton’s Name Resurfaces as Three Eastern Teams Eye a Defensive Upgrade
Toronto already boasts a veteran-heavy defense with big-ticket contracts, including recent additions Chris Tanev and Brandon Carlo. But Carlo hasn’t quite lived up to expectations since arriving from Boston. If the Leafs truly want to make a serious Stanley Cup run, they’ll need more than just depth; they’ll need proven, top-tier defenders.
That’s where Hamilton fits in. Despite his injury history, when he’s on the ice, he delivers, both offensively and defensively. The Leafs currently have more than $5 million in cap space and could potentially clear more room by moving contracts like Max Domi, David Kampf, or Calle Jarnkrok.

Toronto’s championship window is still open, but the clock is ticking. Adding Hamilton could be the kind of high-impact move needed to finally allow them to conquer their playoff frustrations, finally.
The Blue Jackets entered this offseason with high hopes of upgrading their defense but so far have only locked in Ivan Provorov to a long-term extension, a move that has raised some eyebrows as an overpay.
Columbus still has as much cap space as any team in the league, and Hamilton could be the type of player who completely reshapes its blue line. While the Devils might be hesitant to trade within the division, the Jackets’ need is clear, and their financial flexibility makes them a serious contender if New Jersey is open to talks.
So far, Columbus has whiffed on its offseason plans. Taking a swing at Hamilton could change that.
Perhaps the most intriguing fit is Detroit. The Red Wings’ playoff drought is now nearing a full decade, and GM Steve Yzerman is entering his sixth season at the helm. Despite some promising young talent, the team’s activity this offseason has been underwhelming, highlighted by the addition of James van Riemsdyk and a trade for goalie John Gibson.
But that’s not enough to move the needle in a competitive Eastern Conference. The Red Wings have more than $12 million in cap space, meaning Hamilton’s deal would fit cleanly into their structure without requiring gymnastics.
Yzerman himself admitted that many top free agents signed before the Red Wings had a chance to engage. But that doesn’t mean their offseason should end quietly. If they want to win now, and all signs suggest they should, targeting a top-tier defenseman like Hamilton might be the best available move.
