NFL training camp 2022: Dates, news, and locations for all 32 teams

The most important offseason event is also the last one to occur. What dates do 2022 NFL training camps take place, and what do they entail?

While the NFL may not be making as many headlines, the 2022 offseason is still a busy time for players and coaches, with training camp making up a huge part of that. Training camp bridges the gap between OTAs and the NFL preseason. Let’s take a look at the dates when each team can begin their 2022 training camp and where they appear to be basing themselves for camp this year.

When and where are the 2022 NFL training camps?

To some extent, teams have a choice when it comes to the start date for their training camp. However, they have to abide by the strict framework of the NFL-NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). That framework lays out the earliest that any team can have their veterans report to camp ahead of the season.

The rules state that any team starting their season on a Thursday or Sunday can have their veterans report no earlier than 47 days prior to that game. Meanwhile, teams starting their season on Monday can have their veterans report no earlier than 48 days before that game. The exception is for the two teams competing in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. Those teams can have their veterans report 15 days before the HOF game.

What this all means is that the Jaguars and Raiders can have their veterans report no earlier than Wednesday, July 20, 2022. Meanwhile, the Rams and Bills veterans can report no earlier than Saturday, July 23. The remaining 28 teams can have their veterans report no earlier than Tuesday, July 26.

Teams have the option under the CBA to have their rookies report a maximum of seven days before their veterans. Not every team will choose to do this. Some teams will have all their players report simultaneously, while others will have the rookies come in just a few days earlier than the veterans.

Who will be attending NFL training camps?

The date for reporting to training camp is mandatory. Therefore, all players on the team’s current roster are expected to attend, regardless of injury or tenure status. The NFL returned to 90-man roster sizes for the 2021 season and is expected to remain there for the 2022 season.

Last season, we also saw the NFL adjust the structure regarding how they cut down the roster. There were three cut-down dates for teams to reduce their roster from 90 to the 53-man requirement to open the season. The three stages saw teams reduce their roster to 85, 80, and 53.

What should we expect from training camps?

Much like the way the start dates for training camp are closely controlled by the CBA, so is the process for the beginning of training camp. There is a five-day acclimatization period followed by an off day. Only then will players wield pads for the first time as they head into two-a-day practices.

During the five-day acclimatization period, the following ramp-up process takes place. The first day is dedicated to physicals, meetings, and classroom instruction. Players can take to the field only for running and conditioning.

On Days 2 and 3, players can wear helmets, and special protective shirts are allowed for full-speed practice. Days 4 and 5 see players wearing “shells and spiders” for full-speed practice. At no point during those first five days is live contact permitted.
