The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have seen some iconic rosters and coaching staffs since joining the NFL in 1974; however, none may be more beloved than the Super Bowl-winning team of 2002. Defined by their legendary defense, the 2002 Buccaneers squad was led by beloved, albeit controversial, head coach Jon Gruden.
The team was loaded with talent, featuring some of the most feared defenders of their generation, including the likes of Warren Sapp, John Lynch, and Simeon Rice. On Sunday, Simeon Rice found himself enshrined by his former team, having his name added to the team’s Ring of Honor, next to none other than Gruden.

Rice has never been short on confidence, something that was on full display as he addressed reporters regarding his induction into the Buccaneers’ Ring of Honor. Even though Rice explained how he was ready to compete every day, the 3-time Pro Bowler credited Gruden with developing an elite team around him.
“I don’t think he drove me to be a better player. I’m not going to sit here and lie. I was always that dude,” Rice told reporters. “What was instrumental for me was the men around me, and what he was able to do and build a Super Bowl championship,” he continued.

Gruden was not the only coach that Rice felt was responsible for being able to unlock his potential, as well as the potential of the Buccaneers’ roster as a whole. The former defensive end also gave credit to Tony Dungy and assistant head coach and defensive line coach Rod Marinelli for his success with the team.
“Having Marinelli unleash something special inside of me and understanding my true abilities and my talent level was very instrumental to me as a player. So, I thank God for that man. I thank God for Jon and I thank God for Tony for bringing me here. All of those aspects were remnants and a part of the story that stands before you today,” Rice added.
Rice and Gruden were able to share a special moment together during the Buccaneers’ Week 13 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. The former coach presented Rice with a special red jacket at halftime, commemorating his addition to the Buccaneers’ Ring of Honor. It was a special moment in front of the Tampa Bay crowd for Rice, who spent six elite seasons with the club.
