49ers Legend Among Nine Finalists For a Spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame

A 49ers legend is now a senior candidate for the 2026 Hall of Fame class, raising renewed hopes for long overdue recognition.

The San Francisco 49ers will have one of their legends eligible for the Hall of Fame in the 2026 class. He was a three-time Super Bowl champion and played a crucial role in building one of the greatest dynasties the NFL has ever seen. Here is who the player is and what the real chances are of his induction happening.

Roger Craig Among Finalists To Enter Pro Football Hall of Fame

The 49ers have had iconic stars throughout their history, many of whom are recognized across the league as true legends of the sport, including Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jerry Rice. But some of the team’s heroes ended up fading from the broader NFL spotlight, and one of the clearest examples is Roger Craig.

Throughout his career, he earned four Pro Bowl selections, was a one-time All-Pro, won the Offensive Player of the Year award in 1988, was named to the Hall of Fame All 1980s Team, and captured three Super Bowl titles with the 49ers, including a three-touchdown performance against the Miami Dolphins in the 1984 championship game.

Craig’s versatility helped redefine the position. He became the first player in NFL history to record a 1,000-yard rushing season and a 1,000-yard receiving season in the same year, in 1985, paving the way for future dual threats like Marshall Faulk and Christian McCaffrey.

Despite his status as a 49ers icon and his influence on the running back role, a lack of major individual accolades slowed down his Hall of Fame bid. Now, though, his chances are better than ever.

He is one of nine senior candidates under consideration for the Hall of Fame’s 2026 class, alongside Ken Anderson, Henry Ellard, L.C. Greenwood, Joe Jacoby, Eddie Meador, Stanley Morgan, Steve Tasker, and Otis Taylor.

From these nine, only three will be selected as finalists and move forward in the process, and Craig has a strong chance of making that group. His last NFL season came in 1993, which means he is now in his 26th year of eligibility.

Craig played a pivotal role in expanding the role of a running back in the modern NFL. His seven straight seasons with at least 1,100 scrimmage yards helped power the 49ers’ 1980s dynasty, and his impact deserves to be recognized in the Hall of Fame.
