Saints Injury Update: Who Is Out for Week 9?

RB Alvin Kamara, WR Rashid Shaheed, and CB Alontae Taylor were listed as questionable, but now we know who is active for today's game.

In recent weeks, the New Orleans Saints have been relatively healthy going into games, but after last week’s loss, the team had several vital players on their injury report. RB Alvin Kamara, WR Rashid Shaheed, and CB Alontae Taylor were listed as questionable, but now we know who is active for today’s game.

The Injury Update

For the Saints’ matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, all players for New Orleans who were ruled questionable are now active. The one change to the injury report was DT John Ridgeway, who has been ruled out with sickness. Other players that have been officially ruled out are DT Khristian Boyd, TE Zaire Mitchell-Paden, S Ugo Amadi, OL Xavier Truss, and CB Rejzohn Wright.

In terms of who is healthy and who is not, this was nearly the best-case scenario for the Saints, and here’s why.

What a Healthy Team Means for the Saints

The Rams are a 5-2 team, and the Saints are 1-7. New Orleans needs as much help as possible, and they got that with Kamara, Olave, and Taylor active for gameday. Each of these players is vital to the Saints’ success in their respective position groups, and with QB Tyler Shough coming in for his first NFL Start, everyone around the rookie must step up.

Starting with the offense, the run game has been a major weakness for the Saints. Although relying on rookie Devin Neal could be a good idea, Kamara’s availability should help the entire offense. In terms of Olave, his presence was needed for Shough’s first game. Right away, Olave should be the top target for the rookie QB, and his ability to get open will make Shough’s life a bit easier. According to PFSN’s Wide Receiver Impact metric Olave has a grade of C through eight games, which ranks him 38th in the league.

On defense, the Saints have had a number of issues this season against the pass, but Taylor has been improving all season, and it could have been worse if he were out of this game. This matchup is not great against the Rams’ dynamic pass catchers, but with Taylor in the lineup, the Saints can stay alive in this game.
