With the NFL Playoffs underway, teams outside of the tournament are focused on their coaching staff and assessing what they have on the roster. The New Orleans Saints have been hard at work making additions to their future practice squad, the latest being an EDGE with potential.
Saints Continue to Make Small, but Smart, Moves
The Saints could wait until the legal tampering window opens for free agency to find some cheap EDGE deals that could elevate the depth, but why not start now? Yesterday, the Saints signed EDGE Myles Cole to a reserve/future contract.
Before this stop in New Orleans, Cole was selected in the 7th round by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2024 NFL Draft. He was a fifth-year senior, but his nearly 37-inch arms, 6-foot-6 height, and 4.67-second 40-yard dash time made him a very interesting prospect. Cole’s weakness is his pass rush, which still needs development.
In his rookie season, Cole played 8 games, but after his first year, he was cut and went to the Cincinnati Bengals, but was never elevated from the practice squad.
On the Saints, Cole fits DC Brandon Staley’s scheme really well, and playing more on the interior will be where he would shine. If he can develop that pass rush, Cole could even be one of the defensive ends when Staley uses 4-3 alignments.
Now that he is back home (Cole is from Shreveport, Louisiana), he may finally reach his potential and develop into an NFL starter.
New Orleans’ EDGE Group Entering the Offseason
Currently, the starters are Chase Young, Carl Granderson, and Cam Jordan. Young is the top guy and had the best season of his career, finishing with his most sacks (10) in a season, according to PFSN’s EDGE Impact Metric. Besides those three, the depth is bleak and devoid of young talent.
With how good the 2026 NFL Draft is at EDGE, the Saints could, and should, attack that position with at least one of their many picks. The Draft is still more than three months away, so finding some cheap backup options before then is a good idea. Cole fits that bill, and with how high his potential is, even still at 25, he could be a player who makes a real impact on this roster next season.
