Adam Thielen may be focused on Minnesota’s playoff push, but he did not hesitate to challenge the NFL’s officiating structure during a candid appearance on KFAN’s Power Trip. Speaking openly about what he sees as a growing problem across the league, Thielen criticized the part-time referee model and argued that the NFL is long overdue for a fully professional officiating staff.

Thielen said that while many officials work hard, the league still relies on referees who treat the job like a side gig and enjoy the access to star players as much as the responsibility.
“We have these guys that are kind of fanboys,” Thielen said. “They love the fact that they get to shake hands with Patrick Mahomes, hang out with these professional athletes, and then they go to their real job Monday through Friday and tell everybody how cool their side job is.”

He called the system “ridiculous” for a league worth billions, adding that the increased volume of sports betting only raises the stakes for accurate and consistent officiating. Thielen stressed that players and coaches invest their entire week into preparing for games and deserve officials who are fully devoted to mastering their craft.
“These games matter so much. The people who put so much time and effort into trying to go out there and win deserve to have full-time referees,” Thielen said. I think it is very easy to do, and I do not know why it has not been done.”

His comments generated immediate buzz during the segment, with the hosts joking that “the aggregators are going to love that sound.” The league has long resisted full-time officiating, instead relying on offseason seminars, in-season grading, and periodic training updates. However, public pressure continues to rise due to high-profile officiating controversies and the growing influence of gambling on the sport.
Thielen’s message echoes what many players and coaches have hinted at for years. Coming from one of Minnesota’s most respected legends, it adds another strong voice to a debate that is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
