NFL Rumors: Dolphins Eyeing To Sign 4-Time Pro Bowler As Injuries Pile Up for Miami

The Dolphins are bringing in a pass rush veteran to add some firepower to their defense amid injury concerns with their current stars.

As the injuries pile up in training camp, the Miami Dolphins are exploring free agents for relief. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Dolphins are bringing in pass rusher Matthew Judon for a visit. Judon spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons, racking up five and a half sacks.

Dolphins Look To Bolster Edge Group With Veteran Judon

According to Schultz, free agent Judon is visiting the Dolphins on Tuesday. Late training camp visits often indicate serious interest in a signing, so all signs point to Judon joining the Dolphins.

The Dolphins needed pass rush help after linebacker Chop Robinson was carted off the field during the joint practice with the Detroit Lions last week. Robinson has since returned to practice, but the Dolphins are still searching to add more pass-rushing to their defense. The Dolphins had the sixth-fewest sacks last season with 35.

The Dolphins get Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb back in the rotation in the upcoming season. Both players missed the end of last season, with Phillips sidelined by a torn Achilles and Chubb suffering an ACL tear. Both injuries are significant and may take the players some time to get back to their pass-rushing peaks. Phillips has also played just 12 games in two years, while Chubb missed all of last season as he suffered his injury in the Week 17 game of the 2023 season.

Judon is a veteran with nine seasons in the NFL, with his most prolific year coming in 2022 when he had 15.5 sacks for the New England Patriots. Judon has 72 career sacks in his time with the Patriots, the Baltimore Ravens and the Falcons. He has also made the Pro Bowl four times.

The Dolphins will be expecting improvements in their second year under defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. The team traded Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers and saw Xavien Howard walk in free agency, leaving a leadership and talent gap in the cornerback room.

A depth chart featuring Kendall Sheffield, Jack Jones, Cam Smith, Storm Duck, and Ethan Bonner is not immediately going to scare opponents. The team must be hoping that pass-rush weapons like the potential signing of Judon will give the cornerbacks less time to cover.
