NFL Rumors: Chiefs Could Lose Key Member of Andy Reid’s Coaching Staff After Missing Playoffs

NFL rumors are swirling in Kansas City as the Chiefs face another potential blow after missing the playoffs. Insiders warn Andy Reid could lose long-time coach.

Right after missing the playoff berth, losing franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and star TE Travis Kelce expected to announce retirement, the Kansas City Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid are expected to get hit with another blow this offseason.

And this would not be a small change in Reid’s coaching staff, but it can create a vacuum in the offensive squad of the Kansas City Chiefs. It gets worse when Mahomes is not expected to be there to start the season after an ACL tear against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15.

NFL Insiders Believe Chiefs OC Matt Nagy Might Not Re-Sign With the Chiefs

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero released a report on Dec. 20, which discusses top coaching staff members from almost every NFL team who would either lose a job or might land elsewhere.

This list includes the Chiefs’ 47-year-old offensive coordinator, who has been with Reid and Mahomes since he left the head-coaching job at the Chicago Bears in 2021.

Per Pelissero and Rapoport, “One situation to watch: Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy chose not to sign an extension in the offseason and is set to become a free agent. Nagy will be a top head coaching candidate and could well land a job.

“If he doesn’t, Nagy could become a hot candidate for a play-calling job elsewhere,” they write after clarifying there is no chance HC Reid leaves Kansas City, just after a single devastating season.

Matt Nagy’s expected salary is $4 to 5 million, and his tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs can be defined by results. After serving the Chiefs as quarterbacks coach and OC from 2013 to 2017, he returned in 2021 and landed to create history.

In the 2021 season, Kansas City went 11–6, won the AFC West, and captured Super Bowl LVIII, with the offense leaning more on situational execution than weekly dominance. The peak of Nagy’s second run came in 2024, when the Chiefs posted a franchise-best 15–2 regular-season record, won the division again. They also reached the Super Bowl.

In 2025, offensively, Kansas City scored 328 total points (about 23 points per game), placing them in the middle of the league. The lack of consistency, reduced explosiveness, and uneven red-zone output became defining themes of Nagy’s most recent season.

But as Andy Reid might be changing for a new offensive coordinator, insiders suggest two suitable names.

Andy Reid, Chiefs Have Two Familiar Candidates for OC Job if Matt Nagy Decides To Leave

“That would mean Reid needs a new OC, with several of his former assistants — including Eric Bieniemy and perhaps Giants interim HC Mike Kafka — among potential candidates,” Rapoport and Pelissero wrote in their recent report.

So, the top two candidates for the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator seat are expected to be the coaches who have already served with the team. Eric Bieniemy Jr, who is currently the Chicago Bears running backs coach, was the OC and running backs coach for the Chiefs, especially when Matt Nagy was at the Bears.

The other name in the list could also be a great fit for them, as Mike Kafka (current interim HC of the New York Giants) was the Offensive quality control coach, quarterbacks coach, and passing game coordinator from 2017 to 2021.

So, there are two familiar options for Andy Reid to replace Matt Nagy if the offensive coordinator decides to leave.
