Calls Mount for NFL to Make Changes After Controversial Penalties Continue to Help Chiefs

The Jacksonville Jaguars have officially advanced to 4-1 on the season after upsetting the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football in Week 5. While both teams had their moments in this game, Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars came up clutch as he scored the game-winning touchdown with just under 30 seconds remaining in the game. In a play that began in a stumble and looked like it would be a wash, Lawrence turned it into an incredible touchdown, leading his team to victory. This came after an unbelievable throw on third down to Brian Thomas Jr., who made an equally good catch to bring them into Chiefs territory.

Unfortunately for the Jaguars, however, despite coming away with a victory, they likely shouldn’t have been in this position in the first place, as a poor missed call completely changed the trajectory over the fourth quarter.

NFL Fans Call for Change After Controversial Call Leads to Crucial Chiefs Touchdown

As Lawrence and the Jaguars were preparing to drive down the field to try to extend their lead in the fourth quarter, Kansas City came up with a clutch interception to give them incredible field position and a chance to tie the game. That said, while Trent McDuffie had a great interception, there was a clear interference on the receiver by Jaden Hicks.

This controversial call led fans to take to social media to voice their frustration on the matter, with one fan saying, “All NFL refs should be fired.”

Other fans also agreed with the firing, with another saying, “refs need to get fired for missing calls like this.

Somebody else highlighted that the Chiefs are often the beneficiaries of controversial calls, saying, “the refs are always bailing out the Chiefs.”

Another fan agreed, saying, “The refs just handed this game to KC… and it’s disgusting.”

This poor call makes the Jaguars’ victory even more impressive, as they had to overcome not only one of the best teams in the league, but some bad officiating that should have gone their way.

Granted, it’s possible that the Chiefs would go on to force a three-and-out on that possession and still score a touchdown to tie the game. Regardless, Jacksonville should have been rewarded at least another opportunity to drive down the field and score, and that was taken away from them.

Following this loss, the Chiefs now have a 53.2% chance of making the playoffs, a decrease of 9.6 percentage points according to PFSN’s Playoff Predictor. If they missed the playoffs this season, it would be the first time they’ve done so since 2014.
