The San Francisco 49ers opened training camp Sunday hoping to focus on football, but the situation has taken an abrupt turn for the worse.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering from a serious car accident with no clear timeline set for his return. On top of that, the ongoing Brandon Aiyuk saga continues to create another major distraction in the building.
As things stand, Aiyuk and the 49ers are involved in one of the NFL’s longest offseason standoffs, and the dispute has only become more tense with each passing day. As a result, former NFL quarterback and analyst Chris Simms believes Aiyuk’s approach is putting his career at risk.
Chris Simms Believes Brandon Aiyuk’s 49ers Standoff Will Risk His Long-Term Career
Speaking on the “Pro Football Talk” podcast, Simms questioned every step Aiyuk has taken during the standoff with San Francisco. The former quarterback also warned that the situation could hurt the receiver’s long-term standing around the league if it continues.
“I don’t understand anything that he’s doing right now,” Simms said. “If you told me that he was covertly trying to make sure he never plays in the NFL again, I’d go, maybe you’re right. Maybe he’s trying. I don’t know what he’s doing. He’s ruining his career. He’s handled this situation horribly, horribly.”
Back in the 2024 offseason, after a lengthy contract hold-in, Aiyuk landed a four-year, $120 million extension with $76 million guaranteed.
But when a knee injury ended his 2024 season early, the 49ers voided roughly $27 million of his 2026 guarantees. Then, the franchise placed him on the reserve/left squad list in December 2025, officially ending his 2025 campaign.
That decision, it appears, was the final straw.

Since then, Aiyuk has routinely criticized the 49ers and general manager John Lynch on Instagram throughout the offseason. He has also publicly stated that he will never work with the organization again.
Owing to those off-field issues, another former NFLer, Emmanuel Acho, believes Aiyuk has put his future in serious danger with the way he has handled the dispute.
“It’s the end of the road for Brandon Aiyuk,” the former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker said last week. “At some point, humility has to slap you in the face. At some point, you just gotta run into a brick wall of humility.
“At some point in time, Brandon Aiyuk has to run into the wall of humility, and he still hasn’t yet. He done called out Jayden Daniels’ mama. You can’t do certain things. I think he’s done; it’s the end of the road.”
For now, Aiyuk remains under contract with the 49ers, but the relationship appears damaged beyond repair.
Ideally, San Francisco would have moved him in a trade months ago. However, no club has shown interest in taking on his contract after such a long absence from the field and a series of concerning social media posts.
For now, both sides remain stuck without an obvious solution.
